When Michael invited his daughters over to celebrate his sixtieth birthday*, he never in his wildest dreams imagined that his daughters would announce their individual pregnancies, each one with a due date only a few weeks apart. "It'll almost be like having triplets again," he teased. The girls couldn't disagree with him. Knowing Harper's story, Michael asked Lydia and Camilla to share theirs.
Lydia said, "You remember Jay Merrill, right?" Camilla gasped. Jay was the only thing Lydia talked about during middle school and even into high school. Camilla and Harper knew all the dirt on that relationship, up until the present. "He and me... well, it just kinda happened. We didn't plan it, it just happened. Middle school me wluld be so happy that I got his attention."
Michael chuckled at his daughter's reaction. "Is this Jay Merrill guy sticking around?" he asked, hoping that the man didn't break his daughter's heart.
"He wouldn't be Jay if he wasn't," Lydia replied with a grin from ear to ear. "We chose not to, like, continue our relationship in that sense--" Both her sisters voiced their disappointment. "--we just didn't feel like right now was the right time for one. After my breakup and Jay's struggling with a few things of his own, we were just not in the right place emotionally."
"But he is helping?" Michael pressed.
Lydia sighed, smiling at her father, ever the protective man. "Yes, daddy, Jay is helping. He's been so good about it already. He helped me find the best doctor and he's already helping me figure out how to manage my job and a baby. He was so cute, he was at the store yesterday and he saw a whole bunch of baby clothes so he just picked up one of each. We don't even know if it's a boy or a girl yet, so now I have a bunch of clothes I'll end up donating because he got too excited to wait."
"Jay sounds adorable, Lydia," Camilla sighed. "Why didn't you keep him? I mean, me, I understand why I didn't keep my baby daddy around as my boyfriend, but you? God, Jay sounds literally perfect."
Lydia shrugged, the look she always got when smitten with a guy stretching across her face. "I told you. I was emotionally vulnerable. He wasn't wanting a relationship. We just had sex because we were too drunk to make good decisions." Her hand rested on her slightly growing belly. "But it'll be the best one night stand ever and he's going to be an amazing dad."
Only half listening to Lydia's re-explanation, Michael was hung up on something Camilla had said. "What did you mean, you understand why you didn't keep your baby daddy around, Millie baby?" he asked his middle child.
Camilla rolled her eyes, sitting back in her seat. "He charmed me at a bar and ditched me after we did it, dad. He was a douchebag of the highest quality. Charming, yes. Handsome, absolutely. Good at sex, oh, man, was he ever. I'd do it all again even if it meant getting pregnant every time and being ditched every time." Off the wrinkled-nose expressions of her family, Camilla added with a laugh, "Sorry for that image, dad."
Michael shook his head. "No apology necessary. There was a time where that was your mother and I."
"Dad!" Harper groaned, sinking into her seat. Camilla and Lydia laughed.
"I think everyone gets that feeling at some time in their life," Michael continued. "I just wish for you he'd stick around. You are keeping the baby, right?"
Camilla stared at her dad for a second, seeing the sadness of losing her mom to her promiscuous, cheating ways return all over again. The depth and amount of love he had for the woman astounded her. He cared more than he let on. "Yeah, dad," Camilla replied softly after a moment. "I'm keeping her. Not how I imagined having a baby, with a complete stranger--"
"And not your Prince Charming?" Harper prompted.
"Definitely not anyone's Prince Charming." Camilla grimaced at the thought that he most likely swept many other girls off their feet, charming them and leaving them high and dry. "But I fell in love with the idea of having a kid, you know? And then I found out it's a girl and I thought of you guys and I knew I'd be keeping her. I hope she gets to see her cousins more?" Lydia and Harper both nodded their agreement. "Speaking of," Camilla continued, grinning slyly at Harper's boyfriend who had spoken hardly a word the whole time. "Harper, how did you land such a stud?"
"He liked my paintings," Harper said with a shrug and a duck of her head to hide her growing blush. "And I guess he must've liked me too."
Leaning over to kiss his girlfriend's cheek, Cal added, "She's talented and sweet and I think she was really lonely the first time we hooked up because she was super apologetic afterwards but kept coming back for more and... well, how could I resist a talented, beautiful woman?"
Camilla and Lydia shared a glance. "How do you feel about all this baby business, Cal?"
"Harper is going to be an amazing mom. I know she has a lot of doubts, but she'll be great."
Lydia rolled her eyes so hard the neighbors could have heard them rattling in her head. "Not the questioned I asked, Cal."
Cal hesitated, looking down at Harper, who looked up at him expectantly. "I wasn't really ready for it, but I could see how much she wanted me to say yes to keeping it. She begged me and I'd do anything for her. She convinced me. Have you seen her puppy dog eyes? You can't say no to them."
Michael hummed his resistance to the idea of his daughter's boyfriend not wanting the baby. "But you do want it now, right?"
"Of course," Cal defended himself. "More than anything."
A year later, at their father's sixty-first birthday, the triplets each brought their baby. Jay, still just a friend, tagged along with Lydia, wanting to show off his newborn daughter to her grandfather and aunts. Much to everyone's surprise, the triplets all had daughters. Watching the three babies, Primrose a month old, Sidonie a few weeks, and Anaïs only a couple days old, Michael repeated his original statement, "Almost like having triplets again."
*I had already written the parents as divorced, so I'm tweeking that bit of the story.
