Gris has gotten the whole family in a bad situation. She considered giving up thievery, but it was her thing, and she had become Robin Hood-esque, funding her donations with nobles' money. But she saw people still struggling. That's when she decided to rob Lord Shelby, who hates her. It's a long, convoluted story that he doesn't feel like getting into.
On the night of the robbery, Henry and Gris snuck past the guards of his mansion, found their way to his daughter Esmé's bedroom, and without waking her up, raided her jewelry box. They thought it went off without a hitch. It hadn't.
Esmé Shelby, being scared of thieves, could never sleep soundly. She heard Henry and Gris that night. And she recognized Gris as they snuck out (they had history). She and her father did some detective work to find out where Gris lived and complained to the constables. Two constables raided Gris and Henry's house, and one of them was drunk. Gris and Henry were unarmed, but defended themselves as best they could. And that made drunk constable mad. He would not stand for thieves, and he did not care one whit about thieves' families. And he wasn't thinking clearly. That's why he killed Conor and Daniel. (He would have killed Gris and Henry too, but he was on orders to bring then to trial. Maybe they would have a good defense.)
And Gris did. Sort of.
She and Henry were devestated at Conor and Daniel's death, so they didn't have it in them to plead innocent. They were guilty as charged. They robbed Lord Shelby.
Henry, being only an accomplice, was sentenced to five days in the stocks. Gris, being a notorious thief, was sentenced to death by hanging.
But Gris was pregnant. And they couldn't execute her. So she waited in jail until Noelle was born, on Christmas. And that's where we leave her. Her execution is scheduled for two weeks from now.
Eira, Nat, Henry, Katherine, and Katherine's husband Raphael and plotting to break her out.
