Max is supportive of whichever decision she makes, and ultimately, the Merciers end up moving to Connecticut. Thankfully, since they'd made the decision to speak both French and English to Zacharie at home, he doesn't have too much trouble integrating into an American preschool. Unfortunately, they have to leave Axelle and Gauthier behind with Max's parents.

The Merciers pack up and fly to France for two weeks to visit family and to attend Max's family reunion. Zacharie somewhat remembers living there, but Bastien and Elise were both born in the US, and this is their first trip to France. Max and Alexia are sure to take them to do touristy things, like visit the Eiffel Tower and go to Disneyland Paris, but they also visit their friends in Lyon and family in Bordeaux.

When one of the girls who goes to Bastien's school is unexpectedly orphaned, the Merciers take her in and adopt her. Hannah Jade Yancy is eight years old. She's a born performer on figure skates, but very shy when not on the ice. She doesn't talk much when at home yet. Max and Alexia are taking her to a child psychologist once a week and are hoping that might help, because they aren't currently sure whether she was always like this or if she's more affected than she'd previously let on by her parents' deaths.

The psychologist suggests a therapy dog, so suddenly they have a very well-trained, well-behaved golden doodle named Pearl living with them. Elise asks for skating lessons rather than the dance lessons she'd been taking so she can be "just like big sissy Hanny!"

As if two pets weren't enough, Rosie has kittens! They give away three of the four, but keep the youngest one, naming her Cosette.

Alexia gets a job in California. Though they feel a bit bad about moving Zacharie during high school, the Merciers move out to Palo Alto. To their great surprise, Hannah Jade adapts the most quickly, immediately finding a second family at the rink. Elise has decided she doesn't have to be just like Hannah Jade, and decides to try gymnastics instead. Zacharie, whose friends now call him Zach, joined the surfing club at school. Bastien is a bit more hesitant, but does make one good friend, a neighbor of theirs.

This greatly reduces Max and Alexia's stress, as now Zach can drive Hannah Jade to the rink after school, and she can stop complaining about needing to practice on crowded public sessions. ("Mom, Dad, I'm doing *triples*! It's hard to do when people who don't know how to skate are falling all over the place!") (She qualifies for the National Championships, so they suppose she was probably right.)

When Hannah Jade was 18, she moved to Colorado Springs for a new coaching perspective. She made the Olympics two years later, so it must have worked. She met her boyfriend, Travis Glenn Morin, there, though they both trained in Colorado Springs. She's currently going to school part-time while continuing to train, majoring in Communication. Bastien is completing his degree in biochemistry at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Max and Alexia were hesitant about sending either Hannah Jade or Bastien out to Colorado, but when they realized they would be together they didn't feel as bad. Elise has secured a gymnastics scholarship at Sacramento State University, where she plans to major in Finance.
