I do think of it as a nick for Theresa, but I don't expect real Tessas to be Theresas.
I don't like Tessa. I used to, because it seemed fresh and simple. But then I realized that in real life, on a real person, I feel like it seems stuck up and prissy and bratty. It's like Kate. Nice name, but the feeling it gives me is unappealing.
