Reminds me of the Toilet paper brand, Charmin. It kind of sounds tacky.

Makes me think of toilet paper, then I looked at it again and thought it looked like a misspelling of "chairman".

It came to my mind in the recent "C girls' names" thread...I prefer Charmion, and I think I'd pronounce it with a hard C.
With a SH, it is too much like Charmin. It sounds like Charmaine, as other people have said, which seems okay (dated but not in a way I necessarily dislike): I hear it as sort of a cross between Charlotte and Jermaine. It also sounds similar to Sherman or Sharma. I like Sharma; Sherman, not so much.
I like it with a hard C, but not more than Carmen, which it seems very similar to, in sound and, in a way, meaning. Plus the 'charm' part is a little insufferable.
I'd maybe consider it for a pet bird.

Pronounced Charmaine.

Toilet paper. I know it's not spelled or pronounced exactly the same as Charmin, but it's still all I can think of.

My first impressions were...
1 'carminio' Italian word for 'charmine'
2 Carmen
3 Karma
4 Carmel
5 Hermione (because the original form is Charmion)
So Charmian has not its own personality but just a mix of all these links.

I see what you mean! I'm curious, do you think Charmion is any better? Or about the same?

It's not really all that bad, though very out-there for my taste, and hard to know how to say it. Likely to be pronounced like Charmaine, or like Sharmin, as in the toilet paper. Please don't squeeze the Charmian.

I also associate it with TP. Pretty unfortunate. Do you think Charmaine is any better?

It's very dated to the sixties or seventies, and it kinda sounds like chow mein. Like, if I was a Muppet creator and wanted a chicken with a punny sort of name, Chicken Charmaine would be a good choice.
As for Charmin/Sharmin, once I was reading a mystery novel by John Sandford, and the cop was interviewing a pimp and a couple of his girls, who were all hanging out in a hot tub. One girl's name is Charmin, and the cop asks her "As in please don't squeeze the?" The girl and the pimp cut their eyes at each other like "Can you believe this guy?" and the girl says, very annoyed "Jesus, it's CHARMIN, like Prince Charmin!"
