I absolutely love it with the nickname Jed. Although Jed has a hillbilly vibe for many, (I think "The Beverly Hillbillies" producers must have chosen the name because it already had a hillbilly vibe), I knew a very sophisticated, intelligent British man named Jed. That offset the hillbilly vibe for me. In his case, I don't know whether or not Jed was a nickname, and if so, for what. I'd never put Jed on a birth certificate, it would have to be Jedidiah.
