[Opinions] Mignon
I was reading the newspaper today and saw a girl was named Mignon. I like the meaning of it, and the look of it, but I'm not quite sure how to say it. Mig-non? Is that right? Just how it looks?
WDYT of this name?

I don't find it attractive, just as I don't like Jolie. They're not names--they're adjectives, and fussy, patronizing, condescending adjectives, at that.

Bella has bad Sims connotations, too. ;-)

Ah good... I thought I was the only one with Belle/Bella issues.

I'm not fond of either of them, either...
But it's not the patronizing word aspect. Belle just sounds clonky, and Bella is the sound a bullfrog makes!
I also dislike Beau, mostly because, as someone brought up on kidlit like Little House on the Prairie, a beau is a boyfriend, not a boy's name.
Array (who does, however, like Bo)

Wait.. like filet mignon?
It sounds like a weird name to me, for several reasons.
1) It's a rather patronizing word to use, for a grown woman especially. It's not just that the origins of the word mean darling. It's a common French word. So therefore, not that different from naming someone Darling in English.
2) It is hard to pronouce, one of those very french sounds that you practically swallow. It's more like min-yon, kind of.
3) And then there's filet mignon...

agree
Except (not knowing French myself), it seems more to me like naming someone "Cutie-Pie" or perhaps "Tiny" in English. Kind of a strong reference to small physical size... too precious for my taste, at any rate.
meen-YOH(n) .. it's not a difficult one for me, only because of the familiarity of "filet mignon."

This is a French word turned into a name and in English it normally comes out as "meen-YONN". In French I believe the last "n" would be closer to silent and would simply "nasalize" the vowel of the last syllable, but you'd have to check with a native French speaker to confirm that.
Although I've personally never cared for Mignon much, I guess there's nothing really wrong with it. :)
