Not pronounced the same as Mary where I'm from, and it's not good. It's both too adjective-y, too hobbit-y, and too dated, since it rhymes with Terry and Kerry.

Worse. Infinite times worse. Side note: as I kid, I had a book about a mole named Merry who was a boy. It just bugged me.

Better. Hell, Jocund is better than Mary.

Silly as a full name, I can only imagine it as a nn to Meredith.

Doesn't sound like Mary where I live. But whatever it sounds like, it looks like a male Hobbit. The only way it could work realistically would be as a nn for Meredith.

Mary is so tied with tradition. It is so classic, so evergreen, so ageless.. that is flat and boring.

Two things come in mind, but foremost “Merry Christmas!” And merry go round. Which makes this name very prone to teasing I think. Despite that I do really like it! It’s younger than Mary (which makes me think of grannies).

Worse. It's like naming your daughter Happy or Gay.

1. It sounds exactly like Mary in most American accents.

2. It will need to be spelled all the time and still will get construed as Mary.

3. If you know it's Merry, as in Christmas, it's sickly cute.

4. It's trying too hard to be Mary and not be Mary at the same time, accomplishing nothing.

Not nearly as good as Mary. If it were just another spelling of Mary and wasn't actually an English word, I'd like it better. As it is, the word is so shallow ... it's a fluff name like Happy, only riding on the coattail of one of the most substantial names in the universe (Mary) because it sounds so similar. So it's better than Happy. Yet not. I think Merry is okay as a nickname for Meredith or Meriwether or something, but I don't really like it.
