Helmi is definitely more tied with the meaning "pearl" than being a diminutive of Wilhelmina. The more common Finnish nicknames for Wilhelmina are Minna, Miina and Mimmi, which are nowadays used like full names. Similarly Ilona reminds most Finns of the word "ilo" (or "joy"): only name nerds know its connection to Helen.
