I hate it. It reminds me of fratty jerk teenage white boys in the affluent southeastern U.S. city where I grew up in the 80s.

I'm not against "word names" for people, but Clay is not among those I like. Sorry.

Uncompromisingly awful. Clayton is actually better! But Clay feels cold and damp and slithery but with grit, and smells of neglect and has an aura of failed craft projects.

It sounds earthy because it's just that - earth. That aside, it sounds like a nickname. Between the two, I don't like it at all!

It’s also my nephews middle name, a very sweet and uncharacteristically loving teenager.

It sounds to me about as rural, outdoorsy, slightly dated, and minimalist as Wade.

I'd also categorize it with names like: Cole, Colton, Blake, Hunter, Clark, Reed, Newt, Cade, Jay, Wyatt, Mason, Austin, Chase, Russell, Dusty, Frank, Wes.
...not a group I like that much overall, but Clay's one of my favorites from it. I like its earthiness.

I like Clay! Its one of the few "country" names that I really like. It has a wholesome vibe and doesn't get enough love in my opinion.

The meaning is strange: here in Italy 'clay' is argilla that is not a given nane at all (and if It were so a feminine name).

But Clay has a simple, solid and sunny sound with a country vibe. It is strong and youthful.
