I volunteer at a support group for people with aphasia. One of the clients there was telling me about her new granddaughter: Opaline. Opaline is the little sister of Holden. While it is not a name on my list, I was quite surprised (in a pleasant way) to see Opaline. What do you think of it?
My cousins have also been popping out babies recently. The most recent addition is Dax Paul James. His older sister is named Ryann Lynn. They seem to have a thing for short names.

It's like you're reading my mind. I had all the same thoughts. I'm happy my cousins don't use names I like though. That way I don't have to cross any off my list!

How do they pronounce Ryann? Is it just like Ryan, or do the syllables get more or less equal emphasis, as they do in Louanne? I'm asking because one of the large number of people who feel they are entitled to shoot other people - and I'm afraid I can't remember which atrocity was his - is called Ryann and in his case the second -n seems to be purely decorative. or perhaps that's just what local news readers guess.

They pronounce it just like Ryan, emphasis on the first syllable. My mother and I made the mistake of assuming the second 'n' meant the emphasis was on the second syllable, and we received some very displeased looks.

I like it! How is it pronounced? I instinctively read it as -een.

You're right! It's pronounced with the -een ending.

Nice! I checked and, as I suspected, it's another word for opalescent. It can also mean "milk glass." I think those are both great meanings.

Holden and Opaline don't sound like they even belong in the same generation, never mind as siblings. I really like Opal, but Opaline is just too fancified. Plus I don't know how to say it, like line, or leen, or lyn.
