True story which I told here once before, years ago:
My sister is married to an American whose parents were both French Canadians who moved to Massachusetts. His sister, obviously also of French Canadian background, married an American of Italian descent. Their first three children were all girls, and were all given French names. Their fourth child, a boy, was named after his father. When she was pregnant with their fifth child, her husband started to say that he wanted this child to have an Italian name, since the girls all had French names.
So they started calling the baby Vito in a joking fashion during the pregnancy. Like, a stereotypical Italian name. Like, it was a joke. Ha ha. But then, when the baby was born, much to my sister's surprise, they really named him Vito.
I just think that too many people in the US, at least, still see it as a stereotypical Italian-American name.
