[Opinions] Illuminata
I'm sure detractors will cite the name's evocation of "the Illuminati," but I'm not deterred by that. I love this name's antique eccentricity and edgy lucency. Also, the nicknames Lulu, Lula, Lumi, and Minna offer a reprieve (if necessary) from Illuminata's grandeur. So, who else out there appreciates Illuminata?Of course, some combos:Illuminata Agatha

Utterly gorgeous. Perhaps not practical url, but the meaning and sound are fabulous.I especially like it paired with Beatrix, Gudrun, and Zuleika.

Illuminata is fun! It sounds very Harry Potter-esque. I love the quirkiness of Illuminata nn Lulu.

Strangely, I rather like it. It's long and kind of pompous which normally isn't my cup of tea, but its meaning is connected to light, which is always great in my book, and it sounds lovely and soft - I like the double l and the -a ending.
Plus, the only thing I know about the Illuminati is that they're a "secret society" and honestly that seems cool to me :)

You're dead right, I'm afraid. The Illuminati kill it stone dead.

I do find the illuminati connotation deterring, but I appreciate the baroque quality and the fact it sounds like the name of a late renaissance version of Hildegard von Bingen.
vote up1
Love!I think it's gorgeous! Illuminata Zephyrine is probably my favorite combo :)
vote up1
It's pretty. Other nicknames: Minnie, Atta, Luna, Ildy.I like a lot of your combos, Illuminata works very well with longer mid-to-short middles.
vote up1
It's okay. I'd think it was cool if I met someone named it. Illuminata Gudrun is probably my favorite of the combos.Elpida, Juturna, Girolama, and Ipazia are interesting.I like a lot of the middle names, including:
Avdotya, Euphrasia, Euphrosyne, Hestia, Iris, Theresa, Ulrika, Ursula, Valeska, Zephyrine, Zuleika.

A noteHi, everyone!I created this post before embarking (without Internet access) on a 26-mile bike ride; I just returned and was shocked to see a series of responses to posts by Arctic Fox that have been redacted. I gleaned from your responses what she was objecting to. I appreciate the support, and I hope I didn't unwittingly cause headaches. I just wanted to declare & share my love for Illuminata. :)

Which you are perfectly entitled to do.I missed the drama too, in my case because of time zones. I'm sorry that you were a target (as you seem to have been), because you are a voice of sanity when commenting, and your name suggestions are always interesting and varied, which is more than can be said for Arctic Fox's! Don't worry about a thing.

Sorry for grilling her on your post. I'm just supper irritable about childish behavior lately. It was probably uncalled for of me. (Yes I know projection fine fine)

I don’t think it was that uncalled for. Her behavior had to be called out.

Do you know what the word hypocrite is?
I was calling wordsmith our for criticizing me for the names I like when the ones s/he posts about are by far the worst I have ever seen, not to mention a lot of the names s/he has criticized me over are on they PNL!!

He criticized you for being repetitive, not for the names you like. So unless he starts posting about the same four names three times a day every day, he's not being a hypocrite.
vote up1
So why did you delete all those posts if you're so in the right then? And how is it hypocrisy to not have the same name taste as you? If someone doesn't like the names you like, it stands to reason you probably wouldn't like the names they like... because you have different tastes. It's Not That Deep.
Anyway while I'm here, I think Illuminata has a very pretty sound but it is sure a whole lot of name. The similarity to Illuminati is kind of a problem. Would like it on a fictional character though.

We don't "call each other out" for having OPINIONS on a NAME OPINIONS BOARD. People aren't criticizing you when they say they don't like your names. Give it up sis.
vote up1
Don't worry about it. Arctic Fox gonna Arctic Fox.

Yep, this

No worries! We know you didn’t intend for that little scuffle to happen. Illuminata might be a little too much for me, but it has many fans!

Illuminata, IlluminataIt’s a bit too witchy for me. It just has this old feeling to it, I think your word choice of “antique” described it nicely, like an old dusty piece of furniture. I don’t like the Ill- beginning, it’s not a pleasant sound and obviously doesn’t have good connotations, and I don’t like the choppiness of -nata at the end either. I grew up in the Chicago area so I stress my As sometimes, names like Donna and even Connor sound kind of unappealing with my accent at times, and I feel this is no different. However I do really like some of the nickname potentials, Lumi and Minna are both really cute.

Avdotya!I love the name Avdotya. I was very happy to see it in your combo. On Illuminata:
I think it could grow on me. I do like Luminița which I have seen on this message board before (apologies I cannot remember who used it)I love your combos with Avdotya, Cecilia, Euphrosyne, Patrizia and Theresa.

Not my style, but it’s nice. I can’t imagine it on a real person, but it could definitely be the name of an elven princess or a fantasy heroine.
vote up1
Not a fan. To me this name is drawn-out and over-the-top. There is of course the whole Illuminati association with the name, then there is the inevitable question, why give this name if not Italian. A traditional Italian, I mean.
vote up1
Illuminata is the kind of name I'd imagine on some kind of semi-divine literary character from a fantasy series. I like the mysterious air about it, I could never imagine it on a real person, but it definitely works for some kind of high-elf-like character in my opinion!
vote up1
Don't like it

The meaning is beautiful, but the name itself is way too grandiose for me. I prefer Lumina. In fact, Lumina could be another nickname for Illuminata!

I went to middle school with a girl named Illuminata. She went by "Mimi". I think it's pretty, but a little too grand for me.

Wasn't going to say anything to begin with...As everyone else has said, this is an opinions board. Not everyone has to like the names you come up with, and posting super frequently on the boards with the same names over and over again can be annoying at the best of times.Quite frankly the manner in which you've handled this disagreement and responded to the people who have defended Wordsmith's posts really displays a lack of maturity. It's differing opinions that make the world go around, and I personally find a large majority of Wordsmith's names a little too fancy and extravagant for my liking, but I can appreciate their liking for those kinds of names. You want to like or use a creative name then be my guest, but don't go making rude comments or telling others that we're "coming at you" for excessive posting or disagreeing with your name choices. We're allowed to express our opinions, just because we don't like a name doesn't mean we're "coming at you", and don't go being rude to the people here who are just being honest, it's really not on in my book.
vote up1
lol..Illuminata is a hell of a lot nicer than some of the names you've come up with! As previously stated, this board is generally full of people who are interested in names with lots of history and meaning. Modern and creative names don't receive much love. There are plenty of other name boards more suited to your creative names.. but you will generally find that Illuminata is going to get more love than Jazelle or Dalereign etc. Totally fine to say that you don't like the name, but saying what wordsmith is posting is 'crap' is immature

No. We're a board of people who have opinions about names. Does it surprise you that someone who thinks your favorite names are tacky and ugly likes names you think are ugly and tacky? If so, WHY? Percolate on that for a little while.

No one's "coming at you." Why do you perceive it that way? This is a name opinions board. We share opinions about names here. How do you expect to function harmoniously if you take people not liking your names as "people coming at you"??? Wordsmith reacted with some annoyance to you posting the same freaking names like 4 times a day, not about your taste in names. You are MORE THAN FREE to leave if you can't figure out how anything works here. I think your taste in names is interesting - not similar to mine, but interesting - and lends the board an interesting flavor. But posting here literally means soliciting people's different reactions, and you have really got to chill out. "Come at you" please are you twelve years old? Good lord

Why don't you just say, in response to Sophonisba and Perpetua, "I think this name is dumb." That's all you have to do. But "Is this a joke?" "Crap like this", and "BS" are attempts to censor what names other people can post about. But I think my explaining this is a waste of time, actually, because you already know that. You just like to stir up drama.BTW, I still don't believe you're pregnant.
vote up1
Look at some responses to other people's messages. You'll see all kinds of starkly negative opinions. Do you see people getting huffy and defensive about it? No, because we know we're not "coming at" each other. edit: Look at my response to Sebastian. Look at Martha's response to Theodosia. Pretty harsh, and NOTHING personal about the posters involved or implied. It's just part of being on the board.Wordsmith's got quirky taste. He's literary, old-fashioned, obscure. It's FUN. You don't have to like his names to enjoy his contributions to the board, just like I don't really like your ugly tacky names but I think they're sort of fun. This is a community of people with all kinds of different taste, and we need all kinds of styles to balance it out. And the whole point is to share opinions on this relatively low-stakes subject. If you can't deal with that and get along with people with different opinions, then you should either be quiet and "lurk" and just read people's posts until you figure it out, or go to some other baby names board where everyone thinks Xaileigh is super cute.

You're perfectly entitled to highly negative opinions. It's making it personal, and conveying others' opinions as attacks, that's inappropriate.

Yeah, you're mad because Wordsmith recently expressed weariness with your repetitiveness. So the thing to do was at that time politely defend your repetitiveness, not rudely state that he has no right to post about whatever names he wants to.

You don't have to like our opinions, but there's a difference between giving a negative opinion and saying, "Is this a joke?", "Why do you post crap like this?", and calling a post "BS".
