[Opinions] Boris
Today's name of the day is Boris. WDYT?
To me, this is almost a stereotypical Russian name, and I've often wondered how common (or uncommon) it actually is in Russia. I think the stereotype is in my head because of Rocky & Bullwinkle. In any case, Boris isn't really a sound that appeals to me (nor is the similar feminine Doris, or Chloris).

Well, I suppose the stereotype exists for a reason. A handful of my friends still living in Russia are named Boris. It's definitely in common use!
I have a love-hate relationship with this name. On one hand, it sounds rather clunky and comedic. But in the context of the people I know, it seems like any other name.
Also, a guy I dated in high school named his kitten Boris...only to later find out she was female. He never changed her name. Lol

Okay that's hilarious! I'm now picturing a Marie-type kitten (as in The Aristocats) called Boris.
I see either Boris Johnson or the Russian goose from Balto lmao
Not keen on it myself, its a bit.. heavy?

I once met a really beautiful, mysterious girl named Olga. She turned that name around for me, I think it's gorgeous now.
I also met a Boris. He was unfortunate. He was short and sort of aggressive and very masculine and bossy. I feel like he played into the stereotypes of the name and cemented it there for me.
If I met a nice Boris I feel like it could turn the name around for me, because the sound and look are actually rather appealing.

Yes, Olga is exquisite.
I agree with you completely. And it sounds like a burp. BORIS. I just don't like it at all.
I don't like it
Ideal name for a fat, grumpy, elderly male cat.
I love Boris, it's puggish... ugly but cute. It also has some sort of Edwardian Romantic flair that I can't quite explain... makes me think of charming cossacks and Pushkin.
It seems unusable to me now because of the English Trump doppelganger.
Also I doubt a little boy would like the name much...

It would make a fun name for a cat or dog, I think. But I'd feel sorry for any non-Russian man who was saddled with it.
I know a very handsome cat called Boris. It suits him! He sometimes gets called Boz.
There's always the UK Prime Minister. And he's enough to put any thinking person off the name for life.
Pre-2010 I would have said it was a stereotypical Russian name.
Now it is inextricably linked with Boris Johnson. As Llawrycath said, no thank you.

Unfortunately just brings to mind our current PM, Boris Johnson. No thanks.
I really like it! I find it warm, and it makes me think of an affable brown-haired guy in a turtleneck, glasses, and (faux-)fur coat. Boris could be an intellectual, a dancer, a painter, an actor, etc.
