[Opinions] Lennon
What do you guys think of Lennon for a girl?I’m someone with a somewhat “less feminine” sounding name and I often think of how much a girlier name (especially one ending in -a) wouldn’t fit me at all. I think this makes me gravitate towards more neutral, strong names for girls (I also like Sloane which is an unpopular opinion here!)

A Czech "celebrity" called her daughter Lennon Marlene. That's very unusual and male for our country. I personally prefer Lennon for its meaning and for boys.

It's way too masculine and there is John Lennon, of whom I am not an unreserved admirer, but my larger objection is that it sounds too close to the word "lemon".

I love it. Also really like Lennox, which is similar. However, I hate the nn Lenny and I feel as though it might not be avoided.
Also LOVE Sloane!!

I think it sounds too close to Lenin, and he wasn’t a great namesake.

I'm a Beatles fan but Lennon seems sappy in the extreme to me.

I like both Lennon and Sloane for a girl! I absolutely can see Lennon as a girl’s name as it has the Lynn sound in it.

I can hear a Nin, but not a Lynn!

Lyn=Len in a lot of accents. It's...incorrect, but true.

I don't understand why so many people want to name their daughters after men. And that's what they are doing essentially. Are there no strong, cool female role models? I wouldn't mind if they also sometimes named their sons after women. But you never see that. It's a mystery to me.

I’m not pregnant or expecting to be, I’ll get that out of the way first! But,
my interest in Lennon has nothing to do with John Lennon or anybody else. Yes, I see how people would perceive it that way but I’m personally not much of a Beatles fan (nor a John Lennon fan...).

I totally agree. The implication is that in order to project strength and charisma, you also have to project masculinity, because girls aren’t strong or cool.

I have seen people who think this way, but that wasn’t my intention or my thought process when it came to this post or this name.My name is still most definitely regarded as a female name, it’s just not very girly or frilly and I couldn’t imagine myself named something like Olivia or Christina.Mostly, I just like girls names that don’t end in -a. It’s not typical for me to like “trendier” names, though there’s nothing wrong with that. Also, as I said in my own reply to Winter, my interest in Lennon has nothing to do with John Lennon or the Beatle’s, though I could see how it could come across that way. If I ever hypothetically had a daughter named Lennon, she wouldn’t be named after anyone!

I don’t mind “less feminine” names for girls, but I really can’t get behind surnames as first names for either gender. Lennon in particular is so tied to one specific public figure (unless people mishear it as “Lenin” and then it’s an entirely different public figure). What about names like Carmen, Tamsin, Ingrid or Liorit? Something can be strong, simple and unfrilly without resorting to borrowing from the boys or using a trendy surname.

Oh, definitely. Most of the names on my list are the opposite of trendy. Lennon’s just something I’ve been seeing around that I’ve been kind of enjoying, Lennox interests me too.I never liked Carmen or Ingrid. I do like Tamsin but I’m scared of nn Tammy developing. Liorit’s a new one for me. Thanks for the response & suggestions. :)

I don’t like Lennon for either gender, but surprisingly I know two, both girls. One is 27, the other is 8 (with twin brothers McCartney and Harrison... I like the Beatles, but blech!)

I don't know... Lennon kinda doesn't sound right for a girl. I like Sloane though. It's cute and ballsy.

I hate it. I first heard it on a girl about 10 years ago and instantly hated it. I think of John Lennon immediately, so it's both a surname and male to me. And the sound isn't even pleasant. Lennon also sounds similar to lemon and for some reason that puts me off, too. To be fair, I also hate Sloane. I see how Sloane and Lennon connect.

I don’t care for Lennon as a first name for a boy or a girl.
“Hi. My name is Lennon!”
“You mean as in John Lennon?”
No thanks. I like Sloane as a girls name.

I’ve met a boy called Lennon so now I can’t really imagine it on a girl. Also I don’t mind Sloane, I don’t know why everyone dislikes it.

I'm the opposite. I think having a "less feminine" name pushed me towards the more girly, ending-in-a names.I don't like Lennon because of the John Lennon association. I like John Lennon but I think a girl named Lennon would hear "oh, like the Beatle?" when she introduces herself.I like Sloane too! I think it's charming!

My name is still most definitely regarded as a feminine name, I just could never imagine myself with something especially “girly”, like Olivia or Christina (these names in particular brought up because they’re other names my mother considered for me). I understand the Beatle’s & John Lennon association, though that was definitely not the inspiration behind my interest in the name. Glad to find someone else that likes Sloane! Thanks for the reply. :)

Don't like it, especially for a girl
