[Opinions] British-Cypriot BA
A British & Cypriot cookbook writer who I follow on instagram just announced her new baby’s name: Elektra Constance. The baby joins sister Persephone and a sadly stillborn brother Archimedes “Archie”. I love their choices of bold Greek Cypriot names that adapt well to English.

Elektra is cool. I'm not sure how I feel about the K in Elektra and the C in Constance or the mix of sharp and round, but it's a cool name anyway.
Persephone is great, and I think it would have made way more sense with Constance. Persephone Constance and Elektra ____ (something sharper than Constance!) Do you know Persephone's actual middle name?I wouldn't count a stillborn in the sibset, seems a little morbid and awkward for the kids who actually exist, but Archimedes is a GP and makes me think of Merlin's owl in The Once and Future King. I don't like Archie at all though.

Love!And what a lovely sibset!

Elektra Constance is chic. Paired with Persephone it becomes too much. I like Elektra, and I like Persephone, but together they are trying too hard to impress. I love Archimedes as a guilty pleasure. Archie is babyish and boring. Ari would be a more refreshing nickname.

Sorry to hear about little Archie, but Persephone & Elektra as sisters are pretty bada$$.

I wonder if these names are used in modern Greek/Cyprus much today.
Archimedes is just awful. It's almost like a joke of a name, like some science-loving cartoon sloth or something on PBS.
Electra just makes me think of household appliances and incest.

I can’t speak for Cyprus, but these names are pretty uncommon in Greece. You might hear Persephone once or twice, but all three aren’t encountered that often. I would love to see Persephone used more, though.

It's actually not a "joke" of a name -- it has history and substance. :)

I know it's got a history ...I know about Archimedes and his screw and his Eureka moment. It's a joke name anyway, the same as Socrates would be now, or Methuselah.

I kind of like Archimedes. No joke. But I also like other strong, elaborate, historical names like Leonidas and Erasmus. And although I wouldn’t expect everyone I meet to LIKE those names, I’d hope nobody would think they were a joke.

I guess I don't understand your unequivocal dismissal of it as a "joke name." For me, a "joke name" would be something like Twinkletoes or Rumpelstiltskin. Maybe Thumbelina?
