I've always assumed it was female, because of the Neil Diamond song. But, it's also a place name, which I don't enjoy. I'd be very surprised to meet one IRL.

Huh. Oddly, I've always thought of it as male because of the Neil Diamond song. A lonely little boy and his imaginary friend, which I think of as another little boy.
