I'd guess it was either an elaboration of Katya or an attempt to reflect how Katya sounds in someone's dialect of English.
It sounds OK and I don't perceive it as trendy or made-up; I prefer Katya but there have been so many names derived from Catherine etc that I'd avoid it.
