An article in the papers announced the death at 58 of one Edward Cuthbert, 3rd Earl of Oakheart: a respected veteran and devoted father, he will be succeeded in the title by his eldest son, Ned. Thankfully, the illness that claimed the elder Lord Cuthbert’s life did no harm to the rest of his family, including Ned and Octavia’s younger two children, a brother and a sister for the quiet, serious Ralph. Lord Cuthbert died believing his daughter would never be persuaded to marry; however, only months after his passing she was wed to an older man, a Professor of Classics at Cambridge. Her mother does not approve of the match - the gentleman in question is scarcely younger than the mother of the bride, and a Catholic Irishman to boot! - but Ned allowed the marriage to proceed for the sake of his sister’s happiness. To Nell’s disappointment, James attended the wedding with neither a woman nor a captain’s epaulette on his arm

Peter and Margot dedicated a great deal of time and effort to preparing Joy for her first season in what they deem fashionable society, coaching her to within an inch of her life so that there was no chance of her behaviour giving away her rather provincial roots. However, their usually docile daughter instead returned from a two-month stay with a cousin in Bath with the news that she had accepted a proposal from a local man who was made a widower after his wife died in childbirth. The two met at church, and Joy was quite taken with his daughter - Peter and Margot were both fit to faint until she added that the gentleman in question is also a viscount. Her engagement is perhaps just as well, for since the declaration of war with France, few men want to be seen to have a French mother-in-law.

Agnes had truly believed that she and Robert had finally grown to love one another with the birth of their fifth child, another son. He often took Magnus and the twins out into the countryside with him while she cared for Merry and the newborn, and at night the whole family would dine together. One evening, however, while the boys were getting ready for bed, she asked them how their day with their father had been; puzzled, they told her that they had been with their schoolmaster for much of the day. She confronted Robert, who confessed that he had been having an affair with one of the maids - worse, she was now expecting a child. Although furious, Agnes could not help but pity the girl, whose position was so similar to her own a decade ago. She agreed to take the child in and raise it as her own, telling the world that it was an orphan the family had adopted, as long as the girl was sent to work elsewhere and Robert swore to be faithful from that day onwards.
