What are your first impressions of the name Ricky for a boy?
We'd like to use it as a full first name instead of a nickname, but some of the relatives think it sounds a bit trashy.
We're not into substitutions like Richard or Emeric.

My legal first name is Ricky and nobody has ever called me anything but Ricky. I went through a period in my late teens when I kind of hated it but the name always stuck, and now in my late 20's I actually love it. Yes, people sometimes ask what it's short for and when I tell them it's just Ricky it's no big deal. If you want to name him Ricky as a legal first name just go for it.

I have to agree with the others on this one. It's not trashy, but childish. There's nothing stopping you from calling him Ricky, but I'd look for a "ric" name for him to use as an adult.

Not trashy exactly, but not a good idea either. Boys turn into men. Ricky is a baby nn which mostly falls out of use by the time little Ricky hits his tenth birthday. And you will naturally want your son to live a longer life than that! Being a boy who never grows up is fine for Peter Pan, but not for real people; plus, through all his long life, people will be asking him what it's short for, or just calling him Richard.
Emeric is too close to emetic for me, but Richard has strength and dignity. Ricky has neither.

I grew up with a zillion Richards ... back then Ricky was a childish nickname, and all the kids who'd been Ricky were introducing themselves as Rick by the time they hit puberty. So I can't help thinking it sounds childish, or theatrical. But maybe it doesn't sound like that to kids who'd be his peers?
I don't think it's trashy to name him Ricky as a full name. It's a legit name just like Liam is legit. It's sort of deliberately casual, like using Vicky instead of Victoria, or Eddie instead of Edward, and I think people always say they perceive that as less "classy." But is also disarming. And it can also come off as statement, that you think you are too classy to be anxious about impressions of class. heh

It was my favorite uncle's name, but his full name was Richard. Ricky is childish to me, and apparently to him too because he tried to get people to call him Rick; it just didn't take with friends and family, but when he met new people he introduced himself as Rick.
I wouldn't say it's trashy, but it doesn't sound like a mature man's name, or an educated one's name for that matter.
There's jokes that go around like how a certain percentage of Nascar drivers are named Ricky or Rick or Jeff. And that serial killers are disproportionately named Ricky Lee or Wayne.
