Doesn't it also mean fight or argument in the UK?
In the US, it's almost a joke name, very dated and heavily associated with Barney Miller and Barney Fife and of course, the world's most irritating purple dinosaur.
You never see it anymore except sometimes on dogs.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!

Yes, Barney does = fight in British English, but in lower case: barney.
Really? Never heard of that but it's possible. Barney is quite common in the UK (and rising quickly).
But Barnaby appeals to me so maybe that works better.
