Karius and Frede are childhood neighbours who have had eyes for each other for years. They are both children of farmers, Karius the youngest son and Frede the second-oldest daughter. They have recently gotten married and moved into a cottage on the edge of a small village.
Karius has been hunting since childhood. He has a pair of keen black eyes, a stout and resilient physique and cloud of short, brown hair on his head. With him is almost always his trusted companion Walli, an excellent hunting dog he has raised and trained since she was a puppy.
Frede is a tall beauty with pale ginger hair in a long braid and intelligent blue-green eyes. She has a bright voice and often sings hymns and lullabies when her husband is in the woods and she is at home by herself. She got a pair of grey kittens as a wedding gift from her sister, and Mietzi and Schliere both keep her good company and keep the mice away from her bread.

Karius' oldest brother Vester and his family are killed in a house fire. The only one to survive is their 11-year-old daughter Marlein, a shy little girl with thin, blonde hair and green eyes that are striking despite their numbness and sorrow. Karius and Frede take her under their wing. She helps with household chores without complaining, but spends most of her free time praying or sitting on a windowsill in quiet contemplation with one of the cats in her arms.

Karius' friend's hunting dog gives birth to four puppies, and Karius decides to adopt one of them and start training a suitable successor for Walli. He names the pup Bello.
In the spring Frede has her firstborn. The joyful baby boy has his father's frizzy, dark hair and hazel eyes that are constantly looking for new things to grab and taste. Frede names him Severin after her father.

Karius and Frede welcome their second child, this time a daughter. Brida is a spitting image of her father expect for the eyes, which are the green-blue of her mother's. She is named after Karius' late mother. Her life comes close to ending before it has even begun when a flu epidemic swipes the town. She fights it however and proves to be a though little one.

For the third year in a row, Frede is in childbed. She has a rougher time than before, as she gives birth to identical twin boys. Like their sister, they have a head full of tight brown curls and pretty blue-green eyes. The boys are named Anton and Aldred.
A few months after the boys' birth Frede's youngest brother gets married. Travelling with three young children is challenging, but the reward is the whole family gushing and congratulating the parents on such a healthy little bunch.
