[Opinions] Cloris
So, Cloris Leachman died, yesterday I think. Chloris and Cloris are GP's of mine, especially Chloris - what do you think of these names? Is there any retro appeal to them? If you hate them, why?Feel free to make combos if you like! Can you make Cloris/Chloris palatable?

As much as I like Cloris Leachman, I don't like the name at all. I always think of chlorine and it definitely sounds old.

Reading about Cloris Lachman's death made me wonder if all the "regular" actors from Mel Brooks' classic movies are gone. I hope Brooks is okay (he's in his 90s, too).I looked her up on Wikipedia and saw that she was the eldest of three sisters, the younger two being Claiborne and Mary. Cloris & Claiborne were family names (belonging to their parents). I suspect non-name nerds might look at the sibset and decide that Mary lucked out, lol!Chloris is a cool name, and potentially a palatable alternative to the overused Chloe. This is also my preferred spelling, and it's less visually reminiscent of both clitoris (as remarked several times in this thread) and Clorox (what I first think of).Chloris Acacia

); I'm sorry to hear about her passing. She was one of the best. I'll always remember her best as the wacky grandmother from the sitcom, Raising Hope where I first discovered who she was. Anyway, I'm not really a fan of the name, even with the typical spelling. It's not the worst though in my opinion, just very old time-y and less charming than a lot of other names

I prefer Chloe and Clodagh; Cloris makes me feel uncomfortable, but Chloris is fine.

I rather like Cloris myself -- I tend to be fond of any name containing the "or" sound.I wrote a column on the name back in 2013 when Leachman's birthday fell on the date my column was published. Her life story includes some wonderful information about the name -- including that Tallulah Bankhead called her "Clorox Bleachman", and that she decided NOT to change her name for her acting career even those others advised her to because when she randomly opened a phone book to try to find a new name, the first one she saw was "Leavitt":https://omaha.com/lifestyles/cleveland-evans-actress-keeps-cloris-a-rarity-with-mythical-origins-alive/article_910900c5-5e19-5b35-880c-231de729362d.html

Back in the early nineties there was a cartoon called "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" with a go-green-save-the-planet theme to it. One of the villains was called Chlorine Bleachman, no doubt inspired by Cloris Leachman.

Oh, I'm so sad that I can't read it! Apparently the site is blocked in the UK (and the EU).

Cloris reminds me of Clovis and everything medieval, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Never liked it because it has a very strong smell of bleach and disinfectant around it.
