YEAR 1
Homeland: France, A rich and ostentatious kingdom
DH [23] Alain Le Grant
Playwright – Wavy, golden blonde hair and hazel eyes
DW [18] Meraude (de Seyssel) Le Grant
Housewife/Literary Muse – wavy, white blonde hair and pale blue eyes
- ADD [2] Marguerite [Papon] Le Grant “Margot” – wavy, light brown hair and green eyes
Mildly successful playwright Alain is captivated when he meets the daughter of an author he’s recently become acquainted with. Pale beauty Meraude instantly becomes his muse. Her wit matches any of his fellow penman and her laugh delivers his heart to the heavens (plus, she makes a mean fruit tart). Though it takes a while for her to return the lovestruck man’s advances (as the daughter of a writer she’s seen her share of young women go astray due to a poet’s pen and passionate protestations of love then be left in despair when those passions move on to the next available skirt, and she is determined to not fall prey to the same idiocy) Meraude warms to his earnest charms through their lively conversation. Against his father’s wishes (who wanted him to ingraciate himself into wedlock with a doting patron of “wise” years and ample fortune), Alain asks her father for her hand and, a week after Meraude’s 18th birthday, the couple are wed.
Meraude’s friend, who washes laundry for the hospital, comes for a visit with a baby. She tells Meraude the child’s both just died of a fever. Before her birth mother died, she whispered her name to the nurse, Marguerite. The nurse asked Meraude’s friend to take the child for the evening and deliver it to the nuns at the orphanage in the morning. When Meraude holds little Marguerite she can’t think of giving her up. When Alain returns home she tells him of her thought. He looks into the little face, is just as smitten with the baby as his wife, and so she becomes their own. They call her Margot.
YEAR 2: The young family celebrates their first Epiphay together and enjoy the big festival with dance, music, food, celebration! They’ve been busy with little Margot, but Alain and Meraude are hoping a sibling might expand their family soon.
YEAR 3: It’s a girl! Our couple welcome their second daughter and name her Ysabeau.
DH [25] Alain Le Grant - Playwright – Wavy, golden blonde hair and hazel eyes
DW [20] Meraude (de Seyssel) Le Grant - Housewife/Literary Muse – wavy, white blonde hair and pale blue eyes
- ADD [4] Marguerite [Papon] Le Grant “Margot” – wavy, light brown hair and green eyes
- DD [nb] Ysabeau Le Grant “Ysa” – wavy, white blonde hair and brown eyes
YEAR 4: A popular mystic expounds bad omens from a recent meteor shower. He proclaims that war or disease is soon to come. Hopefully it will spare our little family!
YEAR 5: Margot’s favorite pastime is singing and everyone says she has the bright, clear voice of songbird. In the community it seems like the mystic’s word may come true as there is fear of political unrest in the region.
YEAR 6: The family adopts a puppy when their neighbor’s dog has a litter. Alain suggests they name him Kex after the romantic poet and the girls agree this suits him well.
* DDog [nb] Kex
YEAR 7: It’s another…dog! The couple is a bit disappointed that they haven’t had any more children by now. However, Ysabeau kept complaining that Kex liked Margeurite better and she didn’t have a pet of her own, so when the runt from the neighbor’s litter was still left, Alain and Meraude decided to take him. They kept with the poet theme for Kex’s brother, naming him Amis, which was fitting as he was adopted to be Ysabeau’s special little friend.
* DDog [1] Kex
* DDog [1] Amis
YEAR 8: Some Gaelic Irish have begun to practice the old pagan religion again. Meraud, whose family has Gaelic roots and who has leant on the support of the women of the pagan community, joins in. She hopes that this will help bring fertility to their family. Alain is accepting and glad that she is happy spending time with them, but afraid that she’ll run into trouble with the Catholic church if they discover it. Ysabeau has taken to helping her mother gather herbs and garden in the kitchen plot.
YEAR 9: Meraude’s cousin Gwenaëlle is arrested! A jealous neighbor tipped off the night watch that the Gaelic pagans were going to be meeting in the woods and several were caught and are to be tried for heresy. Meraude thankfully ran away in time, but the family is very shaken, nervous, and afraid for her cousin.
YEAR 10: Gwenaëlle experiences a miracle! As she is about to be burned as a heretic, all of the torches the guards are holding extinguish at once. The priest declares that God is reprieving her (they forgot to ask if she repented, but she wasn’t about to say anything!) and to release her to sin no more. Meraude and Alain are stunned and very happy.
YEAR 11: Alain got a commission for a play from a local Vicomte! This is a great accomplishment and, if well received, should help make Alain in more demand and increase the family’s finances.
YEAR 12: Their long wait is over, and spectacularly so! Twins (fraternal) have come to the Le Grant household! Ysabeau pouted for five minutes because she was hoping for at least one brother, but no one can stay mad for long with little Juliote and Clarette around. Meraude and Alain are overjoyed. Clara looks just like her father, while Julie looks just like her mother except with unusual violet eyes instead of mom’s pale blue.

YEAR 13: Margot gets into an argument with her mother when Meraude declines to allow her to sing in a play. Margeurite wants to be a singer on stage, but Meraude says that that’s not a suitable profession. Margot points out that Alain writes for the stage and what difference is it, and plus Meraude married him so why is it unsuitable for her? And would she rather she sing as a nun? As usual, teenage logic doesn’t matter to her mother and so Margot isn’t speaking to her at the moment. Alain’s trying to stay out of it as much as possible, which is easy as he’s been quite busy ever since the Vicomte’s patronage has made him popular.
YEAR 14: Finally, it’s a boy! Meraude gives birth to a healthy son, whom they name Tristan.

YEAR 16: There’s in-fighting between counts of the community. Alain’s patron is disgraced and so suddenly Alain’s writing becomes “unfashionable”. They’re trying to keep up their spirits, but after Clara’s death last year and now this blow to the family’s income and status it is difficult. Julie, Clara’s twin, often sits daydreaming. Her parents aren’t sure if she’s just imagining things in her head as she always has, or if they should be concerned about her.
YEAR 17: There’s in-fighting between counts of the community. Alain’s patron is disgraced and so suddenly Alain’s writing becomes “unfashionable”. They’re trying to keep up their spirits, but after Clara’s death last year and now this blow to the family’s income and status it is difficult. They’re also concerned that it might hurt Margot’s chances at making a decent match in marriage, although she herself is not particularly concerned about this, still hoping to become a famous theatre singer/actress.
YEAR 18: The family receives a surprise proposition for Margot’s hand! The blacksmith’s son, Gabriel, took a fancy to her, seeing her at the market on occasion. The Thomas family being important craftsmen in the community, the Le Grants are surprised that they would consider their daughter for a match, but they quickly take them up on the offer and scratch together a decent dowry. Margot is dismayed and rueful at losing her chance to work on the stage, until she meets the strong and surprisingly handsome young blacksmith, figuring at least she’ll have a pretty husband and she’ll take her luck where she may. Sadly, Kex, Margot’s dog passes away shortly after she moves out of the house. The family adopts three pets this year: two puppies, Felix and Adri, descendants of Kex and Amis’ siblings, and a kitten, which Julie is much more inclined to than the dogs, and whom she names Manon.

- Thomas household: Gabriel and Marguerite get on well together, and a baby girl is born to them! Margot takes joy in singing Sandrine lullabies and is becoming settled to her new life.

YEAR 20: Le Grant household: There is another minor epidemic and tragically Meraude passes away. Alain is plunged into grief with his loving wife, his muse of pen and life, being taken from him so unexpectedly. Ysabeau is a great help taking care of the younger children.
- Thomas household: The epidemic also struck the Thomas family. Gabriel’s father takes ill and survives, but is greatly weakened and cannot continue working at his full capacity, so Gabriel takes over the running of the blacksmith shop.

YEAR 21: Le Grant household: Ysabeau makes a love match, of all things, with the young Apothecary’s son and apprentice, Benoît, whom she had apparently been getting to know after meeting him while herb-gathering. When his father refuses to allow them to marry due to her pitiful dowry, despite Ben’s arguments that she would make an asset to their business with her knowledge of herbs, the two young lovers elope. Alain is pleased that Ysa has found love, though he is sad to see her leave the household especially so soon after losing his wife. Though still grieving for Meraude, Alain recognizes that he now needs a wife to care for the house and Juliote and Tristan. He takes a cue from his daughter and makes a scandalous match of his own (though no one is terribly surprised, he is a playwright after all and they’re all a bit mad, no?). He marries a Spinnestere, Symonne, the illegitimate daughter of a local tailor and one of his maids (who was of African origin). Her mother died in childbirth and her father, who was not unkind (though he did not give her his name), had her raised in his household and trained to spin yarn and weave so she would have a trade to support herself by if he was not able to find her a marriage prospect. When Alain saw her at the market booth he thought her lovely and capable, and to everyone’s surprise including his own, he offered for her. Symonne doesn’t have a choice in the marriage like most women, and even less than most given her situation and parentage, however she is glad that Alain seems kind, isn’t terribly old, and wants a partner in his household, having feared she might not end up with a kind or respectable man especially now that she is already 22 years old. The children were upset at having a “new mother” all of a sudden, but Symonne likes children and is good with them, and it looks like they’ll get along well. With Alain’s profession being only somewhat lucrative, Symonne continues spinning yarn to sell which helps shore up their finances.
- Thomas household: The mystic predicts that the birth of a son to the local Duc is an omen of prosperity and fruitfulness for the whole region.

YEAR 22: Le Grant household: It’s a boy! Symonne safely delivers Sebastian, the newest addition to the family. He’s a happy baby and everyone loves to hold him.
- Thomas household: Margot has her pocket picked by a daring little street urchin while shopping at the market. She was unharmed and the scamp didn’t get away with much coin, so all is well. The couple is hoping they’ll have another baby soon, hopefully a son to carry on the family trade.
- Roussel household: It’s a boy! Ysabeau and Gabriel are also blessed with a son, whom they name Vallerian, liking that the name denotes strength, has saintly connections, and is also the name of a plant (of course).

YEAR 23: Le Grant household: Julie and Tristan are at odds over a stick-figure play they want to put on together. Julie wants to write it, having mapped the whole thing out in her head already, but she is not pleased with the drawings of the character and painted backdrop he’s made from his own ideas before the play is even written! The children get into a verbal battle over it which disolves into a tussle before Symonne sends them both to their beds without supper to consider which is better, full bellies and familial harmony or working by- and getting ones’ own way.
- Thomas household: Another year passed with no baby for the Thomas’, but Margot couldn’t get the audacious little pickpocket out of her mind. He reminded her so much in looks of a little version of Gabriel and in temperment of herself as a girl, with spunk and fearless nature. Being adopted herself, she knew what it could mean for the boy to be brought into a loving family. The couple seek him out, discover that he’s an orphan or abandoned, knowing nothing about ever having a family, and adopt him. The only name he went by was Fiacre, a nickname given by him by other street children because of his raven-dark hair. They decide he should have a proper name from his parents, and they name him Étienne. He thinks it’s fine, but a bit stuffy, though he liked to think of the gory braveness when he heard that St. Étienne (aka Stephen) was martyred by being shot to death with arrows. He’s already begun helping out in the workshop, picking up fallen bits of metal and such, which is helping (somehwat) to keep him out of trouble. His favorite pastime is playing marbles. Sandrine thinks he’s funny and terribly annoying, pretty much like any brother would be!
- Roussel household: It’s another boy! Ysa and Ben name their second son Gentian, after the medicinal flowering plant.

YEAR 23: Le Grant household: It’s another boy for Alain and Symonne! Maximilian is a big name for a little boy, but his parents know he’ll grow into it if his hearty wail is any indication. They’re very happy at having another son and have formed a friendship and solid partnership. Alain has even been known to pen a short poem for Symonne now and again, which makes her blush.
- Thomas household: Gabriel picks up a cat to be a mouser for the house and workshop. They name him Abricot because he’s orange like an apricot. He does catch mice, but he’s also quite the dear and he makes the rounds snuggling on their beds in the evenings. Sandrine’s favorite thing to do is help her mother cook, especially her father’s favorite fruit tarts.
- Roussel household: Gentian falls ill and his parents fear for him, but he recovers. Ysa and Ben are concerned that he won’t have strong health in the future because of it.

YEAR 24: Le Grant household: Alain and Symonne are doing well enough to buy a horse so they can travel to sell Symonne’s yarn and wovne goods at larget towns nearby. They name her Belle.
- Thomas household: The family attends the understatedly-lavish third wedding of Marguerite’s close friend, Katheline. Her first husband (goldsmith) passed away of a seized heart on their wedding night leaving her a wealthy young widow (only mildly deflowered). Her second husband (merchant banker) of a mere two years died of consumption leaving her a wealthier young widow, still beautiful, without children, and hence highly desireable. Her new husband is a Baron, older than husband two but younger than husband one, rich in aristocracy but lacking in coin. Margot and Kat may have laid bets on how long this one would last on the morning of the wedding and Étienne had suspiciously bulging pockets at the end of the day so some other pockets may have gotten picked.
- Roussel household: There is a riot! In the chaos, the apothecary shop has its windows broken and a small fire breaks out. Ben is able to put it out before too much damage is done, and no one is seriously hurt, but they’ll have to replace some of their wares and the windows, which will be costly and take time.

YEAR 25: Le Grant household: Rémy, a poet friend of Alain’s has come to town and is regailing the citizens. He’s become quite popular and Alain and his work are in vogue once again.
- Thomas household: Margot won the bet and they’re attending Kat’s fourth wedding! Margot wagered husband three wouldn’t last as long as husband two and she was right, despite the odds. The Baron fell from his horse while out riding with his friend the Comte, and broke a leg which festered and he died of fever and blood sickness two weeks later. Kat felt bad, but not bad enough not to marry his friend who is younger, more handsome, and had secretly been writing her love letters. Suspicious? The women decided it was best not to dwell on such things, but for safety’s sake they didn’t tempt fate and take bets on this one.
- Roussel household: Twins run in the family and another pair have made an appearance. Ben and Ysa decided to abandon the plant theme for these two, instead celebrating Ysabeau’s great victory in delivering the babes, sister Victoire and brother Nicaise. With four kids under age five they have their hands full!

DW [18] Meraude (de Seyssel) Le Grant
Housewife/Literary Muse – wavy, white blonde hair and pale blue eyes

* DDog [nb] Kex

~ ~ ~ FINAL FAMILY ~ ~ ~
