Ashford is a place name to me. It is also the name of a couple of hospital's I've lived by.
I live in the UK so if I wanted a little Ash I would use Ashley but I appreciate that is not feasible in the US, so Ashford seems like a more sensible choice. Here it would be odd.

Yeah, I saw in the submitted name info that it was a place name in England. You're right. In the US, it won't have that association, and yes, it would still be very difficult for an American boy to carry Ashley today.
