Help[Opinions] Lily and Heather
Someone suggested that Lily is to our time what Heather was in the 1980s. Do you think Lily (nn for Lillian) will be the "Heather" of the 80's? Will it sound that dated one day?

Hm? I like both names. I don't think Lily or Heather sounds dated. I think Lily won't sound dated.

Lily & variants have been used for a long time & as of lately haven't reached the popularity level of Heather.

I don't think Lily will be dated. I think it just had a come-back here recently is all. All the Lily and Lillians I know are in the 60's and up. And those are the names that I like but I've noticed that a good portion of them are coming back 'in style'.
Heather I think is a 1980's name. I've never met one who wasn't born then. But Jennifer is one that I love and would use. There are a few other typical 80's names that I still love and think that nows the time to use them when there aren't as many children with them.

I don't consider Lily (just) a nn for Lilian but a formal name in itself (like Rose, Jasmine, Iris etc).
Every popular name risks sounding dated in 20-30 years. But Lily is a traditional name, I think names like Madison an McKenzie will sound more dated, b/c they have no long history.
Many people say that Jennifer was too popular earlier and therefore too dated now. But Jennifer is still No. 42, does not sound that outdated. (And there were still 1043 girls named Heather in 2005.)
If you love Lily, I think you should use it and don't worry how it will sound in 30 years. Even if no parents name their daughters this name then, it does not mean that Lily is a bad name.

I don't know about that. I love both Lily and Heather, and I would use either one today as well. They are just pretty flower names to me, not dated today or 25 years ago.
