[Opinions] Cotia
Cotia (g) is a character from Rosemary Sutcliffe’s Eagle of the Ninth. The book is set mostly in Roman Britain and Cotia is of the Bregante tribe. On the death of her father her mother finds another man and Cotia is sent to live with relatives who don’t have children. The relatives insist on calling her Camilla to make her appear more Roman but she reveals that Cotia is her birth name.

Camilla is more familiar; I like it quite a lot, though the royal connection is a bit of a deterrent. (I used to enjoy Camilla and Diana as possible siblings!) Cotia is strange: COHteea? coTEEa? COHsha? Something else entirely? Presumably it would have been a Celtic name, or maybe even Pictish ... Cotia from Nova Scotia?? No - I'll stick to Camilla.
