Absolutely not a first name.

I think an incredibly common last name as a first name would only cause a lot of confusion, not just in day-to-day life of meeting people but in things that require your name like banks, credit cards, loans, etc

I think because it is such a common surname, I can’t even picture Smith as a first name.

It just doesn't sound like a real name to me. The last name is so outrageously common that I can't think of it as anything else. And it's pretty short, only one syllable, which I don't love.

I remember way back in the day, we had a poster here, an expectant father, who came here looking for ideas for his new baby. He really liked Smith but his partner wasn't keen on it, but by the end of the pregnancy she had started calling the fetus "Smith". I wonder if they ended up actually using the name....I don't mind it. I like that it's a more unexpected surname-name. It seems a bit counterculture with its directness. And the nickname "Smitty" is kind of neat.
