I've heard this name only once - and it was a character from an obscure PC game called Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria. Saul was the cobbler who's best friend was a sock puppet (and his sock puppet's girlfriend was also a sock puppet).
This is what BtN says of this name:
"From the Hebrew name שָׁאוּל (Sha'ul) meaning "asked for, prayed for". This was the name of the first king of Israel, as told in the Old Testament. Before the end of his reign he lost favour with God, and after a defeat by the Philistines he was succeeded by David as king. In the New Testament, Saul was the original Hebrew name of the apostle Paul."
What do you think of this name and... have you ever met anybody with it?

I don't like this name, I think it's an unpleasant sound... doesn't help the only Saul I know was a creepy old man I met in college who kept trying to touch me.

I love Saul! I wouldn't use it in real life but it has a pleasant sound and I like the look of it.
I also associate it with the guitarist in Guns N Roses. He's called Slash but his real name is Saul Hudson.
