Oh, Monty is fantastic! So poncy and jovial, slightly slick. I am guessing it was short for Montgomery, if for anything.
Monty and Maurice are connected for some reason in my mind, so I also like it as a nickname for that, even though that doesn't make much sense.
It could also be short for Montague maybe?
