[Opinions] Fawns
There was a fire on George 1V bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland. It started in one of the shops and took 60 firefighters and two days to put out. The owners of some of the shops nearby that were undamaged were quoted in the newspaper. One of the shop owners had the first name Fawns. WDYT?

This is not a "nature name" by origin but is instead a surname transfer. My "A Dictionary of Surnames" by Reaney & WIlson says:
"The Scottish (surname) Fawns is from the lands of Fans or Fawnes in Berwickshire"
So it was first a place name, then a surname, finally a given name in this instance.

Thank you for explaining that.
Gosh, I'm sorry about the fire. Edinburgh has always been one of my favourite places.
Are you sure that Fawns isn't a nickname? That's the only way I can make sense of it.

Thank you, Anything than affects the Old Town or the Cowgate can be devastating as the buildings are cat A listed. No mention of the huge central library there though thankfully so I assume it escaped unscathed.
I’m a nosey person so I looked at births and marriages and around 5 or 6 people have been given Fawns as a middle name. I wonder if she goes by her middle name as it stands out more.

As a plural it's just weird. I mean, I find Fawn kind of weird as well, to be named after a baby animal when you will not remain a baby forever. But this is even weirder.
dont like it
Don't like the plural form, sounds like Fonzie "The Fonz", or lawns.
Is this name masculine or feminine?
And it's too strange-sounding as well as surnamey.

The name in this instance was feminine but as a nature name it could also work as a masculine name.
Thanks
