I was watching Rosemary and Thyme on tv and one of the characters was called Hibiscus nn Hibi pronounced with the first I like the start of the word inform and the second I pronounced like ee.

Hibiscus is a wonderful shrub, but a bit too hiccuppy to be a good name; anyone wanting a flower name for a boy might like it, though. Was it on a male or female character? I'm not familiar with Rosemary and Thyme at all. And, why Hibby rather than Hie-bee?

Rosemary and Thyme are fictional gardeners for hire Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme who stumble across murders and mysteries to solve.
The character of Hibiscus was female and we never have the odd pronunciation explained.
Definitely some interesting names though as a character in another episode is called Quintella as she was the fifth daughter.

that's a very odd pronunciation.
Hibiscus is not a good botanical name. It sounds too much like biscuit or discus or bisque.

I've thought of this before, but Hebe is a better nn imo. Not all nickmames have to be so literal.
