Help[Opinions] Orchid
Do you think Orchid has potential as a flower name or nay? I think it does have potential but the word itself is a little bit awkward, with no obvious nicknames nicknames be found from it. It has the advantage of not being super long and people tend to favor short flower names. It's my prediction that it will begin to start cropping up here and there in small numbers from people branching out for the unusual flower names (no pun intended) but will never become a notable contender in the floral name pantheon.

I like orchids, but I hate Orchid as a name. It's just an awful sound, and it's too much like Orkin, the pest exterminator company.

I used to think it was horrid (orcs, ew), but that was before Astrid, Sigrid, Opal, and Lilac became some of my favorite names.
It's definitely striking...also kind of awkward but not necessarily in an off-putting way. It seems like it'd be a cool name to call someone.
The etymology is funny. I wouldn't be too bothered by that if it were my name. I'd claim flower symbolism as the meaning, considering that'd be the inspiration for the name, anyway.
Ori would work ok as a NN (not that it needs one). Or Kiki.

I can’t get past the “orch” meaning “testicle” (as in “orchitis “).

Etymologically impossible, plus it sounds sufficiently like 'Aw, kid' to be a real temptation to teasing 'friends'. Use at own risk.

I don't think people living in rhotic parts of the English speaking world (most of USA, Canada, and Scotland) have to worry about the "aw kid" thing. That would never occur to me as an American. :)

Not only does Orchid sound ungainly but the meaning is also a turn off. It comes from Ancient Greek orkhis, meaning “testicle.”
Some of the specific varieties or genera of Orchid could work as a name.

The Chinese name Xiulan is lovely and has orchid in the meaning. The Japanese name Ran, which also means orchid, is cute.
