What do you think of this Ukrainian variant of Helen(a)? I'm pronouncing it "oh-LEN-a," which I know is not the proper Ukrainian pronunciation, but it makes sense for me as an English speaker. I also like "oh-LEE-na."

I know one. She is Ukrainian. She pronounces it O-lee-nuh. O-leh-nuh is slightly prettier, but I don't like names that start with the Oh sound. I do like the AH sound as Oliver. I do not like the name at all. It reminds me of Olean the diet cooking oil that made... all kinds of dieters in the 90s have bathroom accidents.

I don't like the look of it: the O puts me right off for some reason. Olive Oyl, perhaps? And I don't like Helena either - too many pronunciation issues. But I do love Helen and would gladly use it. From your suggestions, I really like:

I think the insstinctive pronunciation would be Oh-LAY-na, or Uh-LAY-na, similar to Elena.
That o really messes up the look of it for me. I really like Elena/Elaina/Alayna/Alaina, and the Ole makes me think of Oil of Olay or old Swedish guys in hundred-year-old ethnic jokes, or like margarine/oleo.
