Dane, here where it's also been used a lot back in the days, as it's very dated here.
Like grandfather, great-grandfather etc., and I'll always think about it that way. I was born in 1977 and had a teacher who could've been my grandfather at school for ref. While I like it's meaning, it's just too dated.
I doubt that has a bearing in the US, where it could be new and exciting (much like Søren / Soren). Plus, he could have Danish or Norwegian ancestors, so named it for honoring in a way.
