[Opinions] WDYTO Hazelen?
It's prn Hazelyn. I came across it a couple of days ago; it's the name of an older lady, ns of nationality, or even if nationality plays a part in her name. Despite the fact that it has the trendy "-lyn" sound, I really like it. Hazel is nice, but a bit too old-sounding for my taste. Hazelen sounds younger, but not trendy to me for some reason. Opinions?

Hazelen is kinda of cute, not sure if I like it though.
I think it sounds a tad familiar; well, part of it, anyway
Remember this? *LOL*

All I mean is I think it's funny that our opinions of names are so arbitrary in some ways. I mean, I like the name Joe but don't really like Joseph, for example. I loathe Madison but like Madeleine, which to some people's ears is nearly the same (never mind the S/L contrast, but you know what I mean).
I think Hazelen is fine, it's different, I like it. You just made me laugh is all. :D

In my defense... :oD
Emberlin has -lin and Hazelen has -len. Yup, that's it! If it had been Hazelin, I'd have gone, "ewwwww..." I like the fact that it kind of looks like Ellen, and I'd probably prn it like Hazellen. :o) But yes, you're absolutely correct in that my likes & dislikes are completely arbitrary. I'm exactly the same with Joe & Joseph and Madison & Madeleine. I love Josiah, but dislike Joseph. What kind of sense does that make? :o) PLUS, I know Hazelen has some sort of history (I mean, come on, it's the name of an old lady; what more proof do you need? lol), while I know nothing about Emberlin. It could be that Emberlin is a very old family name, in which case, I'd probably like it a teensy bit more. I know I'm rambling & not making any sense whatsoever, so I'll stop now. ;o) Can't defend the indefensible!

Hazelen is nms. It doesn't sound as pretty and refined as Hazel, and not younger and prettier, but... ugh! Very nms.
Andrew
I love just plain Hazel. Hazelen just looks odd and doesn't sound as nice.
I don't like the spelling. Way too many little letters (a, z, e, e, n). Somehow, it doesn't look nice, esp. cause of this len. Hazelyn looks better. But I neither like the sound of Hazelen/-lyn nor of Hazel. Sounds stupid if you say it a few times aloud (I tried ;-)).

-en behind something makes it plural in Dutch, so to me this looks like hazelnutS or something. It just looks weird to me. sorry...
I prefer Hazel (although it's definately not one of my favs)

On first glance, it looks like a combination of Hazel and Ellen to me, so I would instinctively pronunce it hay-ZELL-in. I'd have a hard time remembering Hazelyn, I suspect.
While I like how it looks, and I love weird old lady names (I go to the library and search through the census records to find the coolest names I can--I've got a big list! :), I don't think I'll warm up to it too quick. Hazel's already a family name for me, and it unfortunately feels like an unnecessary elaboration.
And now I'm starting to think about Hazellen--oh, Cambria, what are you doing to me?! ;D
...And just in case you're interested, here are some of the greatest fn-ln combos I've found in the old (oldoldold, from 1790-ish to 1930) census records:
Ladies:
Fozrine Bile
Precious Cutright
Alzettie Dorden
Lovey Fortune
Charthenia Gritt
Thursday J. Love
Artemissa Possum
Lemon Time
Gentlemen:
Precious Bean
Berzilla Cobby
Ura Cobra (to be fair, he was from Austria)
Delray J. Freak
Muffin Mann (I kid you not)
Money None
Metal Rankin
Smile Shine
Bottom F. L. Side
Whisper Wheaton
The full list is available at no additional cost. ;)

I have a strange fondness for old-lady names, too.
I go to our cemetary (town was established in 1805, but the cemetary is actually a bit older) to find unusual names. And yes, upon seeing Hazelen, I thought it was Hazellen, too. I'd have to spell it Hazelyn or Hazelin to say it right! Please, PM me your whole list. I really like Artemissa Possum and Muffin Mann. (Those parents had great senses of humor).

Better yet, I'll put it right here.
It's perpetually unfinished, of course; whenever I go to the library, I come back with a few more names. Some of them aren't odd so much as really neat-sounding to my ears, but I promise that each and every one of them was a recorded person. :)
