[Opinions] Re: My friends most beautiful girl names...
in reply to a message by Gaia
I starred the ones I think are beautiful. Those aren't necessarily the ones I like most - I enjoy Beatrix very much, but I think it's more handsome than beautiful. Likewise, I wouldn't use Angelina, as it isn't my style, but I still think it's a beautiful name. I included a middle name for each.
Alina: pale and spectral. In the famous Polish romantic drama Balladyna, Alina is the titular character's sister, and gets brutally murdered over a pail of raspberries. I prefer Adelina - equally lacy and youthful, but more grounded, less waning. Or Helena - equally ethereal, but more memorable. Or Malina - equally Slavic, and means raspberry, so it reminds me of the story.
Aleida: mature and melodious and medieval. This has similar vibes to Eliza. I like the sound, but not so much the look. I prefer the related Alida and Adelheid. Or, since I'm feeling kree8yve today, Adelayde. Alina Lilias.
Aaliyah: very strongly associated with the singer, and the number of vowels gives me a headache. I prefer the sleeker Alia - though I'd pronounce that A-lee-a. Aaliyah Salome.
Amélie: mellifluous, but a bit too strongly associated with the quirky movie heroine. Amélie Wallis.
Athena: far inferior to Minerva. It has this unhealthy, oily sheen to it. Athena Hyacinth.
Alethea: alright if it's a-leh-THEE-a, dreadful if it's a-LEE-thee-a. Either way, it sounds like Alicia with a lisp. I far prefer Verity. Alethea Rachel.
Angelina *: a very very pretty enamel ballerina of a name. Angelina Fenella.
Beatrix: undeniably cool, but still respectably vintage. I'm not crazy about Bea or Trixie, but they're fun in this retro jazzy way. Beatrix Medea.
Calista: this annoys me. It tries to be Callisto but pretty. Instead, it turns out being Callisto but with a plasticy, inauthentic feel. Calista Halcyon.
Cleo: Cleo is lovely. Feline, with a cabaret vibe, kind of tawdry, but she owns it. I've been toying with Cleopatra "Cleo" for a while. Or Cleophus "Cleo"! For some reason, Clio doesn't appeal. Cleo Mirabelle.
Cosima: this weird blend between Italian Renaissance and sci-fi. I'm not crazy about it or Cosmo. Cosima Rosenda.
Celia *: this is undeniably beautiful. Heavenly, and I don't use the word lightly. This lovely cornflower blue, and associated with Celia of As You Like It fame. I've had the combos Celia Rosalind & Alice Ophelia (or Alice Juliet?? Alice Miranda?? Alice Cordelia?? Give me Shakespearean middle names for Alice!) stacked in a corner of my mind for a while. Celia Lavinia.
Elise: limpid and lispy. I prefer Elsie. Elise Cordelia.
Elizabeth: it's a strong name with a wonderful history and perhaps the widest array of nicknames ever, but I wouldn't call it beautiful. The sound is actually quite awkward. I prefer this spelling to Elisabeth. Elizabeth Noël.
Esmeralda: gaudy. I am yet to find a jewel name I enjoy. Esmeralda Samira.
Eva: I prefer Eve, as Eva lends itself to pronunciation issues. Eva Rêverie.
Evangeline *: a bit too evangelical for my liking, but undeniably beautiful. Poetic, ornate, rich. Evangeline Anahera.
Genevieve *: undeniably beautiful, but it's too clean. It's like when you see a model so flawless she barely looks human. I prefer the grittier Guinevere. Genevieve Magdalen.
Hermione: sparkly, with a metallic, steampunk shine. I enjoy it very much, and wish it wasn't tied so much to the Harry Potter character. Hermione Semiramis.
Hera: I never know whether it's HER-a or HEER-a. Not a very pleasant namesake, but she's hardly worse than her male counterparts. Hera Séverine.
Iris *: it used to be my #1 feminine name. I still find it beautiful, even though I don't find the flowers particularly pretty. Iris Frideswide.
Liora: I'd spell it Leora, as I want to pronounce Liora as LYAW-ra. Either way, I find it unattractive. Similar vibes to Eleanor. Liora Esperanta.
Leona: this is very solid and respectable, but there are simply so many Leo- names that are much better that I can't get excited about it. Leona Ffion.
Lydia *: this might genuinely be the most beautiful name of all time. Lydia Cassiopeia. Though my long time combo is Lydia Wren.
Laura: I prefer Laurel or Laurie to the boring English LAW-ra, but I like the Italian LOW-ra very much. Laura Seraphina.
Mary: I prefer Maria or Miriam. But we need more Mary's who go by Polly. Mary Charmion.
Maria: I'm biased, since it's my name, but I like it very much indeed. Maria Christobel.
Milena: darling, but dated. Milena Silvestra.
Maxima: sounds mathematical. I prefer Maxine. Maxima Amabilia.
Morwenna: dramatic and witchy. I like it. I imagine a Morwenna with a raven perched on her shoulder. Morwenna Linnéa.
Nadejda (Or Nadeja): Nadejda is a dreadful transcription. Nadezhda isn't ideal, but it's the best there is. It sounds too close to the Polish word for approaching/arriving to me, it feels fairly foreboding. I prefer Nadia or Nadzieja. Nadeja sounds Arabic to me, reminds me of Nadiyya. Nadejda Smiljana.
Natasha: much inferior to Natalia. Natasha Talitha.
Natalia: pretty. Nutty. Inoffensive. Melodious. Natalia Laurentia.
Olivia: I genuinely cannot see the appeal. Its only redeeming quality is the Twelfth Night character. Olivia Tivoli.
Ophelia *: too mournful to use, but stunning. Let's bring Polonius back instead. Ophelia Mabel.
Ravenna: a bit too placey for my liking. But then again, I like Vienna. Actually, scratch this, I like it. It's a good name. Ravenna Parthenope.
Rosaria: pretty and thorny. Rosaria Sarai.
Seraphina *: beautiful, but so very cold, despite the fiery meaning. I prefer the Serafina spelling. Seraphina Persephone.
Serena: eh, it's nicer than Serenity, I guess. Serena Terpsichore.
Sophia (Or Sofia): Sophia's popularity is well deserved. Few feminine names have meanings that emphasize intelligence. The Sofia spelling makes me think of the Bulgarian capital. Sophia Hildegard.
Stella: a bit too pretty. Smarmy. I prefer Esther. Stella Demelza.
Veronica: I might actually prefer Berenice. Veronica is so nasal. Veronica Maeve.
Valerie: pretty and strong ballerina name. It reminds me of the Amy Winehouse song. Valerie Clarice.
Valentina *: I've come to prefer Valentine, but this is still beautiful. Valentina Lorenza.
Vivienne: Vivian > Vivien >>> Vivienne. Vivienne Liesl.
Vienna *: stunning. Vienna Illuminata.
Yvette: dated and frumpy. At least it's better than Yvonne. Yvette Steren.
Zarina: sharp, zingy, and all around unpleasant. Reminds me of Tsarina. Zarina Florentine.
Zenaida: zeh-na-EE-da > zeh-NEYE-da. But neither appeal. Zenaida Azélie.
