[Opinions] Help me name my character!
I won't reveal too much of my novel but I will describe my character:)
Female 18
*Extremely free-spirited
*Spontaneous
*Hates being controlled
*Used to act out in during school
*Tends to not think before she speaks
*All around a sweet soul who loves people and helping them
*She's also part French and she can speak it quite well
The only names that are coming to mind are Madeleine since I love that name and a French name would be a nice touch, but English names are also very very welcome
Its a dark plot filled with stories from her past and a new adventure in a new town riddled with dark secrets and death.
Do what you will with this information :)

Going off what you said to Roxstar about her background, it sounds like she might take after mother, who must have been a bit of a wild card to have a baby and either refused to name the father or not know. I'm going to imagine the mom like Meryl Streep's character in "Mama Mia" but with French ancestry. I can see the Mom liking Madeline, so that works.
Other ideas:
Adeline
Carmen
Céline
Celeste
Chloé
Danielle - This would be an interesting choice on the mother's part due to the meaning, God is my judge, which sort of implies that God can judge her but not others.
Emma
Eve
Geneviève
Giselle - The meaning is odd, but maybe her mom felt tied down by a baby.
As an aside, I wonder if people around her would see the character as sweet. From an authorial perspective, you have insight into her intentions, but other people would go off of what she says and her actions/inactions. People who habitually don't think before they speak are often not thinking of others. Free-spirited and spontaneous is sometimes code for someone who is unreliable, frequently keeps others waiting, and doesn't plan ahead. What does "not liking to be controlled" look like in her life? Is she a commitment phobe? Is she a rebel for the sake of it? Maybe there is a gap between how she sees herself and how she comes across to others.

I kinda doubt someone who's *extremely* free-spirited and spontaneous and acting out would have stayed in school but whatever.

These are all very fitting names, they would be lovely on her.
Not like she has a choice in elementary and middle and highschool, but whatever :)
Pretty names and thanks for the extensive selection

Sure she did, if she didn't care about rules.

The first name that comes into mind is Audra / Audie.
Loveeee Audra, especially the meaning "storm" which encapsulates what she is :) Sounds so strong but pretty, this is what I'm going with thank you so much.
Madeleine/Madeline/Madelyn would be fine.
However, her personality (which frankly sounds not very sweet or helpful, just manic) is not as important to her naming as other things. Such as time and place. You say she is "part French" but where does she live? What time period? What's her other background/s? What kind of people are her parents?

Hello :)
Her mothers dead and she doesn't know who her father is, so she grew up under the care of her various aunts and uncles and other family members.
I did mention her personality a lot I kind of want the name to be based off of it at least a bit I think that was my problem with Madeleine (oops I should have added that to the post). Also about personality comment , I think manic is a little extreme lol. Being controlled is horrible and I don't think that's a very unpopular opinion, not thinking before speaking is a very common flaw that happens to everyone at least sometimes and nothing wrong with being free-spirited or spontaneous ㄟ( ▔, ▔ )ㄏ. Don't think any of this destroys her ability to be a sweet person who likes helping? Anyways I think you made very valid points with everything you said and you are completely right, this is my first time doing this type of thing so thank you for the feedback that will help me with future characters and maybe more posts

her mother still named her ...
Or had a hand in naming her, so her background and personality do count.
The trouble with basing a name on someone's personality is that quite frankly, none of us have a personality when we are named. It takes some time to develop and of course it changes over time. It's the same problem with choosing an aspect of appearance to name a person after: Scarlett may be born with a headful of bright red hair, but the chances are good to excellent that she'll lose it within a few months and end up a blonde or a mousy brown.
Even naming after a positive trait you hope the child will someday have doesn't always work out. My daughter had a good friend named Grace, (I have no idea if she was named specifically after physical grace, or spiritual grace, or after Grandma Grace or just because) and she is this tall, lanky girl who is clumsy as a giraffe whose shoes don't fit.

Roxstar makes a great point, and I agree. Most of the time, whenever people are looking to name characters they should think less about the character's personality and more about their parents, what kind of people they were/are, and what would have influenced them in a name choice.
I agree, thanks for the feedback :)
