[Opinions] Pansy
WDYT. I guess sometimes I like this name because of the pansy flowers.

I can't help but think of it as a slur. :(

It reminds me of Peony. Peonies are very beautiful flowers, but the sound isn’t very beautiful. It also reminds me of “pee on me”. Pansy is what this reminds me of. I think pansies themselves are quite nice, but it reminds me of “panties”. I don’t know, it’s a 3/10.

1. I'm vaguely familiar with it because of Harry Potter.2. I started liking it when I went through a phase of loving Pandora.3. I like the meaning/etymology "thought" plus an alternative name for pansies is heartsease.4. An illustrator I like has a logo or signature image of a pink pansy next to barbwire, and I like the sentiment of that...5. Pansies are mentioned in Shakespeare plays at least twice.6. I have some reservations about it, but they wouldn't keep me from using it, if it seemed like the perfect name.7. I think it could be a nice name for a pet.8. Stylewise, I'd group it with...
Opal, Veda, Bessie, Pearl, Pansy
Prunella, Clover, Poppy, Lilac, Pansy
Or guys names like Grover, Irving, Cleon9. It's a bit goofy and heavy sounding still but potentially vibrant, unexpected and delicate/sweet, reminds me of a vintage postcard.

ETA Sorry - should have been a reply to the OP! My bad.Pansy used to be and perhaps still is used as a disparaging term for a male homosexual, in British English anyway, which makes it impossible for me to take it seriously at all. There was a character in a British children's comic called Pansy Potter; her father was the strong man in a circus, and she had inherited his amazing strength and used to to get into and out of trouble. I've never seen it IRL but references to it do crop up. Another reason to avoid the name? But, yes, the flowers are lovely.

I think of the girls in old American films with floral dress. Not really a fan.

I love pansy flowers, but I would rather use Violet to refer to them, instead. I don't really like the sound of the name Pansy.
It reminds me a little of the word pants. Tansy sounds better to me.Also, I think the reason why it's incredibly rare these days, despite names like Daisy and Poppy being trendy, is because "pansy" has been used as a slur. The disparaging term makes Pansy (on paper, not on a person) seem worse than Dick or Fanny, to me - those coincidences of the names with certain word usages, are merely droll, not vexing like with Pansy. I would not think that a person being named Pansy was referring to that - not at all. It's fine! I just have the association with the slur, lodged in my head, and am prone to be reminded of it by the name. And that's just annoying - it's not Pansy's fault, her name's alright and does make me think of pansy flowers. Having heard pansy used to put someone down, is just a reason why I don't consider Pansy appealing, when I think of names I would personally like.
