YEAR 40 Gareth is diagnosed with Lyme disease after he experienced unusual insomnia and depression, likely from a tick he picked up on one of their hikes (which are much rarer these busy days). He is being treated with a long-term course of antibiotics, which his doctors anticipate will relive his symptoms.
YEAR 41 Note: I’m assuming most if not all of the other siblings have partners and maybe children by now, I just didn’t bother to add them, in case they end up in the story somehow. 😉 ,
Ender’s good friend and former studio co-owner Radha sells a painting to a rich collector and becomes famous and is starting to be very sought after. Ender has to admit he’s a bit jealous, but mostly he’s super happy for her and hopes she continues to be in vogue.
YEAR 42Alex and his wife Ashley get divorced. He stays with Maeve for a few weeks while he finds an apartment, and Ender and Gareth try to cheer him up by taking him out for a hike with the twins, but it’s obvious that he’s preoccupied and missing his own daughter, Bridget who is 8 and living primarily with her mother.
YEAR 43It’s a boy! And a girl! Our couple gains – sort of –surprise children! The fertility clinic that Gareth and Ender used called to say that, due to a clerical error, they discovered the couple had a few more fertilized eggs left when they thought they had used all of them. The clinic wants to know if they want to keep storing them, donate them, or have them destroyed. They quickly confer and decide they’ll seek another surrogate (thankfully their previous surrogate knew someone reliable who was available) and go for it, now or never. Hilariously and joyously, they end up with another set of twins. Their son, Gray, takes after Ender and their daughter, Betony, looks more like their egg donor did, but they all joke that she takes after Maeve (Ender’s adopted sister)..
YEAR 44 Ender and Gareth pick up a hobby (activity, really) they can do even with two babies in the house and start doing yoga at home.
YEAR 45 Ender’s having a hard time mentally lately, what with the chronic lack of sleep and general stress of life and his career not being the same as it was. He resumes going to a therapist and that’s been helping a lot.
YEAR 46 Willow is in the hospital. She had a bad gallbladder attack and had to have it removed, but she’ll be okay and will recover quickly.
YEAR 47 Ender gets a “promotion”. He is asked to teach watercolor and sculpture courses at a local museum, which will be excellent, regular income, a new challenge, and some exposure for his work.
YEAR 48 Morgan is diagnosed with asthma. It’s been pretty bad, and they’re working to find the right medication management plan for her. She’s sad because she really loves hiking with the family, and says she wants to be a park ranger some day. Her fathers explain that she’ll still be able to do most of the things she likes to and it shouldn’t affect her being whatever she wants to be. They’re worried about her, of course, but her doctors are optimistic that it will be well in control with treatment.
YEAR 49 Ender is reading more than he used to (his therapist suggested it as a way for him to de-stress, and surprisingly it really helps and he remembers how much he loved reading as a kid). He’s currently enjoying murder mysteries and recently loved The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman.
YEAR 50 The family has a reunion! It’s really nice to see everyone and their families. Gabriel recently moved in with Nova (who moved to LA around 10 years ago where she’s been able to transition more from modeling to acting) and she and Aleyna thought it would be a great idea to have everyone get together at this time (and before Gabriel got too much older).
