I don't like Walter - to me it is very old mannish, and sort of stilted, stuttering, square.
I don't really like Walt either. Reminds of Disney.
But Wal is kinda cool. If he always was called Wal, I would be less dismayed to see it on a kid.
I think Walter would make a good honoring middle name.
