I find Malcolm uncomfortable to pronounce. It shortens to Mal or, worse, Malc. Where I live, it is really dated: I'd be surprised to find one under the age of, maybe, 65.
I wanted to name our son Ian but for family reasons I couldn't. If I'd had a second son, he'd have been Ian for sure. Classic, timeless, no need for a nickname, and I've never met an unpleasant one, or even an ordinary one.
