Cliff and Marcella started having problems when Cassandra and Cliff tried to be friends, putting their romantic past aside for a time. Marcella was unconvinced that Cliff wouldn't leave her for Cassandra, so she left him. Leia went with her mother while Sapphire Shay was left behind because she didn't make up her mind fast enough. Sapphire Shay clings to her brother, now in high school, more than ever in the absence of her big sister. Meanwhile, Cliff and Cassandra decide to start again. They date for longer and actually talk about how to make their marriage work rather than jumping into it like they had previously. They are married two years after Marcella's leave. Another son, Jason, is born soon after, then a daughter (Caitlin) a year later. The whole David Charles Heath family is rooting for Cliff and Cassandra, hoping they'll make it this time around.
Gabriel and Macie turn out to be not the best couple. Macie learns of Gabriel's old habit, and is scared he will relapse. She doesn't want the kids around him and so she leaves, trying to take both kids with her. Samuel refuses to leave, staying with his dad. Gabriel is heartbroken about this, realizing that his old habits are hurting him more than he ever thought they would. He becomes an activist against drinking and drugs.
Tony breaks it off with Sammie for another woman, and Sammie swears of dating. Then she meets Viktor and has Julia with him. So much for her oath. David likes Viktor, but Stacy is unsure about him.
