I like the idea of Bijou much better than the reality. I've also heard that les bijoux is a slang term in French that pretty much is the same in English: the "Family Jewels." (Except Bijou and Bijoux sound the same.) Of the two, I prefer Jewel, which is something of a GP - I could never use it myself, due to the Jewel grocery store chain that's prominent in my region.
More likely, I'd use the actual name of a particular gemstone (e.g. Emerald or Sapphire) over a name meaning gemstone.

Aw, this was the name of a little black cat I had! For that reason I'm very fond of it. In terms of a person's name it makes me think of anime characters, or a video game character or something - it has a very whimsical, fantastical quality to it; it's a name that has a kind of "colourful sidekick" energy to it.
Jewel is all right too, but I am definitely more attached to Bijou.

Sounds a bit pejorative when used in English. And I don't like jewel names, Jewel included, so I can't do mns.
Jewel is preferable by a long stretch. Bijou is almost unpleasant in appearance and sound.
