[Opinions] Sequoia (male) “Seq”
I like the name Sequoia for a boy. What do you think of it? The meaning is “sparrow.”
I like Sequoia Henry.

It's alright. Very Californian!
"Seq" though. Seck? Seek? I don't think that works at all. Sounds like sex, or Sikh.
Hard to nickname. Skoi, maybe. Quoia. But not Seq.

It's interesting. I think I prefer the Sequoyah spelling, though.
I’m not really a fan, but I think it could work.
I’ve only heard of it on girls and it’s too out there for me to use in real life. It could be okay on a boy, but there’s just so many better options in my opinion. I definitely wouldn’t use Seq, unless you are pronouncing it in some way I can not think of. It sounds like getting cut off right before finishing saying sex. Quoi, like Coy, maybe a little better. I don’t trust Nameberry’s meanings. They don’t give history and sources like this site. I’m very sure it doesn’t mean sparrow as Sparrow is it’s own name and Sequoia is well-known to be a tree.
I second all of this.
I only know it to be a girl's name. I knew a girl named this throughout school, who I didn't care for, and for valid reasons. Every time I think of the name, I unfortunately think of her. The name is undoubtedly different, but I'm sure if it wasn't for having that association, I would be a little bit more okay with it. I don't care for Seq at all.
Also, Sequoia derives from a name of a tree. Seems very unlikely for it to mean sparrow.

This is really interesting! I went to look up the meaning of Sequoia, and saw that the tree was named for Sequoyah, an Indigenous polymath admired by the man who gave the tree its genus name. According to Wikipedia Sequoyah means "there's a pig inside" and was given to Sequoyah in a mockery of his birth name (which meant "there's a bird inside") after he failed to do farm chores. What a story! The name of the tree is also apparently influenced by the Latin "sequi" ("to follow"), referring to its seeds. Cool!
Sequoia Henry is handsome.
Sequoia Henry is handsome.
Thank you for that. I learned a different meaning but prefer your information.
From what I could find googling...
tis s gwa = bird
tsikwâ'yä = sparrow
si'qua = hog or sometimes opossum
They all seem similar to Sequoyah to me, as someone who doesn't speak Cherokee. I don't know if the original meaning is known definitively.
Wikipedia says "Gi sqwa ya (there is a bird inside)" is what one of his descendants said his birth name was, while telling the story New Chloe mentioned.

How on Earth can a tree share its name with a sparrow? Please provide your source.
Because the tree was named by a European without regard to actual meaning. He most likely named the tree after the historical Sequoyah.
You are assuming that the historical Sequoyah was himself named after a sparrow. Please provide your source for that, if you have one.
My source is Nameberry’s article on the name.
Nameberry are imaginative rather than scholarly.
Sorry, but I wouldn't trust Nameberry at all. They aren't the most reliable source when it comes to many names.
I’m sure meanings are embellished there for readers. It’s interesting, though.
Check out etymonline's entry on it:

Thank you for posting that. I think this name just sort of materialized from a mosaic of different sources. It feels so organic; it is like meanings coalesce like DNA from multiple parents. Only this meaning seems like it has a seven-parent genome. :)
I don't like it
