High above the fields of Rosetown, in the country of Apala, you will find the Northwood Tower. It wasn't always called that, but the Northwoods were always there. The people of Rosetown whisper that the tower was a lighthouse once, in a time lost to history, upkept by years and years of Northwoods until the sea dried up and the very tower itself began to change. Esau, the current patriach, certainly looks the part - a ruddy, haggard face with crinkly eyes and a thick beard. It makes him quite the odd match for his wife Kalyani. Her smooth brown skin, long black hair, and delicate, bird-like features made her a beauty known all through Rosetown, even as she stays in the Northwood Tower. The couple have three children - Amos, Ezra, and Amabel. Ezra, poor child, resembles his father, looking world-weary at only 10. Little Amabel is just as lovely as her mother. And Amos, well, Amos is a fine blend of the odd couple - black hair as thick as his father's, sharp grey eyes, warm bowed lips, and skin tan enough, you'd never know he barely leaves the tower. Kalyani leaves fairly often (once or twice every few weeks) to visit town, shop, fellowship. Normally, Amos stays put. As the eldest, he's Esau's apprentice, and keeping care of the tower is hardwork. But a few months ago, Amos was allowed to market with his mother, and there he met Theophania Murgatroyd. Rich by some's standards and a pauper by others, Theophania is the daughter of a local schoolmaster. A quiet girl, she's a great beauty, resembling the Greek statues of the classics her father is so fond of. They caught each other's eye instantly, and Kalyani let them be. Since then, they've written daily without cease. While Esau found it frivilous, there seemed no harm in their dalliance - until Amos ran off last week, leaving only a note that he had eloped with his love.
