[Opinions] Brink of Extinction
Replies
Harold’s a great-granddad name, it’ll make a comeback any day now. A writer for the Bystander under the name Calpurnia noticed this all the way back in 1904. The great-grandchildren of the Harolds, Alfreds and Fredericks born then are now raising Harrys, Alfies and Freddies of their own. https://www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2018/07/twas-ever-thus-naming-from-an-edwardian-womans-perspective.html
I like Maximilian out of all of them.
These surprised me:
Deirdre
Katrina
Giles
Nigel
Rashid
Deirdre has given me the impression of "posh" usage in England, at least, but I suppose it has fallen out of fashion altogether. And while Katrina wouldn't have the taboo of a hurricane in the UK, I suppose Katherine and Catriona would be more common. (Though I'd expect Katarina & Katerina to go "extinct" first - unless they already have.)
Nigel surprises me the most of all of these. I consider it a quintessentially English name ("Making Plans for Nigel," etc.). Has it just become so dated that it's unusable?

Sheila is ubiquitous in my mother’s generation (baby boomers), is why.
I don't know what i the world kind of criteria, if any, they're using to determine whether these names are "on the brink of extinction." Was Gayatri ever a name in the first place? Last I checked, Cameron was still quite popular.
Can't say I'd miss any of these:
Barbie; Britney; Carrie; Farrah; Kelly; Shania
Baxter; Bill, except as a nn for William; Brent; Clement, though I like Clemency very much for a girl; Cliff, and his songs can go too; Giles; Harold;
Kamran - does the same apply to Cameron? Maximilian - I prefer Max; Rashid surprises me, as Muslim naming is typically conservative.
As for the rest: I don't like Deirdre much, but it's all right. Same with Gail, Katrina, Lindsey, Sheila and Shirley. I actually do like Katrina and Sheila, come to think of it. Nigel is dated, but the Nigel people I know are all teenagers in their 50s and 60s so it does have a youthful vibe. Quinton is the name of one of our current international cricketers, so it also feels young; I prefer Quentin.

Isn't Nigel a stereotypical old man name there currently? I hope it circles back around soon I really like it.
I would probably regret, if this names disappear forever :
Deirdre, Katrina, Lindsey, Sheila & Shirley
