Charlie in my eyes is only a nickname and mainly for Charles or related names. It's definitely a better nickname then Chuck or Chucky.
I loathe it as a name or nickname for a girl. It annoys me when used as a nickname for Charlotte for some reason.

Boy only, nn only, too weak for a stand alone. Grew up with a Charlie, full name Charles, so the image is tied to him, blonde and sport oriented.

I like it for both. Atm, I like it more for a girl. For a boy, I imagine someone who is a bit cheeky and mischievous, with messy hair and a big grin on his face. He likes to draw and probably plays hockey. I immediately think of Joshua Jackson's character in Mighty Ducks - the leader, the heart and soul of the team. I also think of this cute Australian boy I met online on a drawing website. He was a model, but he was also very friendly and kind. Very well liked by everyone. I also think of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is probably why I get working class vibes from this name. For a girl, I definitely get tomboy vibes. I honestly imagine kind of a Joey Potter-esque person, like from Dawson's Creek. Not sure why Dawson's Creek actors/characters are on my mind for this name, but yeah. She's not above playing soccer or hockey with the boys, and she always has something to prove. She's a hard worker with a mind of her own. In terms of associations, I know several baby girls name Charlie atm and my former co-worker had a daughter named Charley, who was a pretty high level hockey player.I don't associate it with a particular time period for a boy. For a girl, it sounds a bit modern to me.

I prefer it on a boy, but right now I hope it becomes popular for a girl. I like it best as a nickname for Charlotte as well.

I've known boy and girl Charlie people, and I don't mind it at all for either. No image either: no two are alike.

When I was a child, I used to watch a TV-Show that used Charly in the title, so I always think of a monkey🙈
I'd prefer it for a boy.
