Love Almudena, especially with the nickname Almu! (I was gonna say that when I read the subject line of your post, so I was so pleased to see that your friend went by this.)
I wonder if it's seen as a bit posh/conservative in Spain. I've been to Madrid and while the Cathedral la Almudena is beautiful, its association with the royal family seemed a bit off-putting to me.
