TCM teaches us this was the name of an old movie about a super model who was given this name when she became a thing rather than a person to those about her. Well chosen for that particular point.
I think of the wood rather than the tree! We had a mahogany dining table when I was growing up. As a name, I would be cautious about any name in which the stressed syllable was Hog.
I've encountered it IRL. I thought it was cool/fun...I'd probably feel similarly if I met someone named Fuchsia...or it was about the level of pleasantly surprising as when I met a Gardenia. I'd agree it's similar to Ebony stylewise but quirkier or less dated (since it's not been popular); I like Ebony (and Hazel, Willow, Holly, Juniper, Rowan, Cherry, Apple, Maple, Linden) too FYI.

This is in the same category as Ebony: names that enjoyed a brief vogue pretty much exclusively with black families and then just fell out of fashion. I think Ebony was much more popular, and I would bet the reason behind that is that the hog right in the middle of Mahogany as well as the fact it doesn't really roll off the tongue very smoothly is the reason.
I love Ebony but don't like Mahogany. Because of the hog.
